THESE ARE THE REALISTIC PLAYERS THAT CARDIFF CITY CAN STILL SIGN AS FREE AGENTS

Says Glen Williams

Friday 3rd September 2021

Robbie Brady

The Republic of Ireland international is a free agent after leaving Burnley in the summer.

For many Cardiff fans, they believe Brady would be the perfect post-deadline addition, with Murphy's exit leaving a bit of a chasm on the left wing and the player also able to operate in a wing-back role, another position in which the Bluebirds are very light.

Cardiff fans also got a little excited after someone changed his current club to 'Cardiff City' on Wikipedia, but don't read too much into that one!

The latest reports suggest that clubs in Turkey are taking a look at him, but the set-piece specialist would be a top addition for any second-tier club, one would think.

Plus, there is that Mick McCarthy connection with Ireland, so the manager clearly knows about his talents.

From an outsider's perspective, of all the free agents, this one would be the one which makes most sense from a Cardiff City perspective.

Neil Taylor

Wales international Neil Taylor is without a club after leaving Aston Villa this summer.

The former Swansea left back is still only 32 and has a wealth of experience at Championship and Premier League level.

Another player who could prop up the left-hand side, but given his links with Swansea it would be a surprise to see him rock up at Cardiff City Stadium.

Swansea do of course have Jake Bidwell while Ryan Manning is more than capable of slotting in at left wing-back. A second spell at the club does appear unlikely though.

Connor Wickham

A player who never really scaled the heights his early career promised, the striker has recently been released by Crystal Palace.

The forward is still only 28, which is remarkable given he seems to have been around for so long.

While he just looks that little bit short of goals in the Premier League, his record in the Championship is excellent and could be an option if either Cardiff or Swansea are looking to bolster their forward lines.

Ahmed Elmohamady

While Cardiff are well-stocked at right back, Swansea might dip their toe in the water when it comes to looking in that position.

Connor Roberts departed for Burnley on deadline day, meaning only Manchester United loanee is an out-and-out choice for that wing-back role.

Kyle Naughton and Joel Latibeaudiere can fill in there, though, if required, but if Russell Martin wants to add experience to his side, the 33-year-old former Hull City and Aston Villa man might be an option.

He is perhaps a little too old to fit in with the Swans model, though, and his wages could well be an issue, too.

Jack Wilshere

The former Arsenal midfielder has been training out in Italy while unattached, with clubs seemingly staying away from him following his tumultuous injury record.

But Wilshere is still only 29. Cardiff have been dying for a ball-playing central midfielder for the longest time, but given his wage demands and the fact they are well stocked in that department, it is highly unlikely they would make a move.

As for the Swans, they are now blessed with options in the middle of the park after Matt Grimes remained at the club while Ntcham was brought in.

Flynn Downes will be back after the international break while Liam Walsh is closing in on a return to action after a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Hal Robson-Kanu

Another player who would better any Championship squad is Hal Robson-Kanu.

The Wales international is proven in the second tier and could be thrown in at the deep end, without question.

At 32, he probably has one more decent-length contract left in him, so would he be worth a punt at either south Wales club? He is more of a sure bet than most other free agents on the market, that's for sure.

During West Brom's promotion season in 2019/20, the striker scored 10 goals. He can be physical, direct and doesn't shirk the ugly side of the game, either. A very good pro.

Jordon Ibe

Still just 25, Jordon Ibe's career is a curious one.

Having shot to prominence with Liverpool, the winger eventually opted for a move down to Bournemouth despite playing 27 games in the Premier League with the Anfield outfit the season before in 2015/16.

Despite being a regular with the Cherries, he perhaps didn't produce as much as was expected of him and was ultimately released in June of last year.

Ibe was then picked up by Derby County, but in January this year he revealed he has suffered with depression and in July his contract was mutually terminated with a year remaining.

Of course, he must get better within himself before talk of a new club materialises into signing any contracts. But he is a young, exciting talent still and one who could prop up any Championship squad.

Kadeem Harris

Cardiff could do a lot worse than getting Kadeem Harris back on board.

The winger was let go by Neil Warnock in his final transfer window at Cardiff City Stadium because both he and the player knew he needed regular football.

Harris showed flashes of true quality in a City shirt and many were sad to see him leave, but understood there were too many people in his way if he wanted regular action.

Having turned 28 this summer, there is still a lot of football to come from him. Indeed, he should be hitting his peak right about now.

He started brightly at Sheffield Wednesday, but faded and was let go this summer. Given Cardiff's lack of wide options, if Harris is at a loose end and the Bluebirds need to restock, it might be worth a punt.

Connor Wickham all day for me,though not prolific goalscorer his ability to unlock defences can't be denied.Could play in the wide 10 role MM seems to favour.Good cover for Tomlin.

Apparently we have no money to sign any of them, so the debate is a bit academic although I would take Robbie Brady if we found some cash down the back of the boardroom sofa.

That certainly seems to be the case and I can't see anybody being added now.

Out of the list I'd take Elmohamady and perhaps even Neil Taylor.

Brady too.

Need cover in those positions most

If they are now unemployed, maybe their wage expectations will be reduced considerably.

I dont think it's possible to make a worse signing than Kadeem Harris

If the club didnt want to pay the wages of free agent Marley Watkins who IMO wouldn't have been on too high an amount then we wont be paying any of the wages that these players would want. Even if they are currently free agents

quite possibly , the last thing our club needed was someone come in and possibly be perma injured when the squad is already thin...

I doubt we could afford any tbh it was only a few month's back the club was bigging up the youngsters with around 6 to 8 or whatever talk could make the first team four weeks later they released some of them and some moved on for league of Wales teams and so on, yet on more money as they kept offering them lower money contracts. Dalman talks absolute shit a consistant paid liar but tells you he takes nothing. The accounts say different. Eitherway if we go with 11 youngsters I'll still be there when the money grabbers currently playing move on for free or the boardroom :bluescarf:

If this is to be a season of transition bringing youngsters through we don't really need to be bringing in these sort of journeymen type championship players. Play the youngsters some will not be good enough some will. If enough are good enough we will be ok if they aren't that is the time to look at the free agent market.
