Ryan Giles back, a big boost?

"Absolutely, yeah. He has only had two or three days back, so I can’t say he’s functioning fully and up to full speed.

But he’ll be in the squad tomorrow and hopefully then he’ll be back playing Tuesday and maybe Saturday as well."

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCARTHY:

:bluebird: Team news:

Joe Ralls is the one that’s missing, that’s it. Everyone else is alright.

The usual other names are still out Lee Tomlin & Isaac Vassell.

Mick McCarthy

Joe Ralls?

He might be around on Tuesday or next Saturday.

Last week, defeat, plenty of positives this week?

There’s parts I was happy with. Parts not. That’s generally the case.

We’ve had a good reaction this week.

Anyone who beats Bournemouth will win the league. It’s a tough game for us, that.

How do you think Cardiff have started?

We started reasonably well but there’s three defeats in four, that can’t be described as well.

We need to get a win under our belts.

Mark McGuinness, has to bide his time now?

"He’s unfortunate, the three centre backs who have played have been excellent.

He did get in. Big Sean got injured and then he did his ankle in that game.

Then he’s been a close contact of Covid and had to isolate again, that’s been frustrating for him.

But he cruised through it (the U23s game against Sheffield United). He’s a very good player, Mark."

MICK McCARTHY:

Blackburn Rovers

Another tough one. No easy ones in the Championship.

Tony has got a good side there and plays good football and gets good loans.

They had Armstrong last year and now they’ve lost him, but they’ve got a team that shares it around.

Brereton-Diaz has come to the fore as well. They all know what they are doing.

MICK McCARTHY:

What do you think of the job Tony's done?

If they can keep getting the goals they will have a chance around the play-offs.

We are early in the season now but they have had a good start.

MICK McCARTHY:

Safe standing?

I’ve not given it too much thought. It’s not been at the forefront of my thinking this week.

The reason it changed in the first place was it was deemed not safe. But if it is deemed safe and that’s what people want then I’m all for it.

MICK McCARTHY:

Not scored a goal in the first half, why?

I don’t know. We are not doing anything different.

We had three reasonably good chances against Bournemouth and didn’t score. I haven’t got an answer for that.

We are trying to play the same, I don’t have an answer for it.

MICK McCARTHY:

James Collins did so well pre-season, just needs a goal?

Mick:

I think so.

Any time there has ever been a goalscorer who can’t get a goal for whatever reason, he just needs something.

It’s the old adage, whether it’s off the back of his head or the backside, a deflection, if he gets his goal then it’ll make him feel better about himself and he’ll go on and score goals for us.

MICK McCARTHY:

Spoke about Kieffer burnout pre-Euros, proven right?

I’ve had it. You can go to the Euros and there’s such a euphoria about it and then you come back and you are knackered.

It’s a bit of a comedown then. You’ve had your season, scored 20 goals, been to the Euros, you do need a bit of a break.

But the break you don’t need is getting Covid and then being a close contact of Covid. If it was just a break from football and he could continue his training and be healthy, that’s different.

Being at home, isolating, it’s not good for anybody.

MICK McCARTHY:

Four defeats in five, anything different you have to do now?

"Having lost Joe Ralls and Gilo, they both were playing well, and I’m not suggesting anyone who came in did anything different, but we were on a bit of a roll.

I do think that Kieffer has been affected by Covid, being off. It’s strange, when he played the two years non stop he was fine. And then as soon as he went away with Wales and he got Covid, then he was a close contact and he couldn’t train again, I do think that’s affected him.

We have not really been as efficient as we could be."

U23s doing brilliantly at the minute

MICK:

It’s fabulous.

That’s not been the case, it’s not been evident for a long time.

I’m looking at our squad with Kieron Evans in it, Sam Bowen, Mark Harris, Rubin, Joel Bagan playing on a regular basis.

That’s great, but we need to start getting results and win games as well, I’m more than aware of that.

Honestly, the standard of questioning from our press is a joke.

Ask why it is not working, why we are not scoring enough, why are players starting to continue to fail to perform - and then probe, prove, probe until actual answers are given.

It’s like a cozy little chat with questions that are actually questions, but just statements of the obvious.
