FA Youth Cup finalists 1971 -Anyone remember them?

Fri Sep 24, 2021 4:46 pm

With all the talk of bringing in the youngsters, for those over a certain age- and there a fair few on this forum!- who can remember the night we lost the second leg of the FA Youth Cup final to Arsenal at Ninian Park?

I can remember Phil Dwyer, Derek Showers, Nigel Rees- he who put the ball on Brian Clarkes head against Real Madrid-Jimmy McInch, Billy Kellock and Jimmy Hobby.

A great crop of youngsters but as far as i can remember only the legendary Phil Dwyer and to a limited extent Derek Showers went on to establish themselves into the first team, though i seem to recall Kellock went on to play for someone else for a while

Anyone add to the above list?

Don't remember the game I was just a nipper but I'm sure I heard our ex coach Terry Burton was in the arsenal team that day along side a Ferndae boy who's name was Charlie Newton he'll of a player...He was Rob Page's uncle

I cant remember any of the Arsenal side but it would be interesting if some of that side went onto greater things. I do remember we beat Burnley in the semis whose star player was already regularly playing in the top division. A certain Leighton James!

John Williams, Phil Dwyer, jimmy Hobby, Billy Kellock, John Impey, Alan Shaw, Brian Rees, Jimmy McInch, Alan Couch, George Gibbs, Nigel Rees, Sub Peter Davies. 0-0 at Arsenal. Lost the home game 0-2 a few days later in front of a decent crowd. Showers missed the games because of injury.

Dwyer, Kellock, Impey, Brian Rees, McInch, Couch, Nigel Rees and Showers all plays 1st team for us, only Dwyer and Showers became regulars though. Plus Kellock who had a season and a bit in the 1st team before being sold to Norwich for £25k.

John Impey only played 21 games for us but had a total of 461 League Appearances mostly for Bournemouth. Billy Kellogg also had a good career making a total of 298 appearances mostly for Peterborough 134 but only 35 for us. Biggest disappointment for me was Bridgend boy Nigel Rees who looked a world beater when playing against Real Madrid but only managed 27 games for us before going back to play for Bridgend.

Brilliant! Thank you I can now remember most of those names i missed. Didn't realise Showers missed the final, he might have made the difference because he scored a load as a youngster. Kellock was a decent player and i didnt realise we got 25K for him which was a fair fee in those days. I think a couple of the more promising ones got career ending early on in their careers.

Crowd was good. I seem to remember there was around 13,000 there that night.

Once again thank you for filling in the gaps

Those of a certain age will recognise some decent names in there, especially club legend Phil Dwyer. Billy Kellock and Nigel Rees decent too, then McInch, Couch and Impey were ok.

I think Nigel Rees was only 17 when he played against Real Madrid. I thought he picked up an injury which effected him throughout his career but that may have been somone else.

That was my favourite season, the first team nearly got promoted, we beat Real Madrid and with the crop of youngsters coming through there was great hope for the following season. Unfortunately football is so unpredictable and we nearly went down and never really got back to that level until about 15 years ago.

A few in the Arsenal side who went on to have reasonable careers, Brendon Batson, Brian Hornsby, David Price and as someone else pointed out it included Terry Burton
