'An almighty underwhelming performance' - The Mirror

Cardiff fans were far from happy with Mick McCarthy's team selection against high-flying West Brom tonight.

The inclusion of five centre-halves hardly inspired them to think they could get a positive result against such dangerous opponents.

And those fears were realised in a thumping 4-0 defeat at home.

Individual errors and lapses in concentration combined to ensure another forgettable night for City.

Granted, Alex Mowatt's strike to make it 3-0 was an unstoppable hit.

But the other goals were courtesy of generous defending from the hosts - something you rarely associate with McCarthy sides.

Even more miserable was that Cardiff did not register a solitary shot on target in an almighty underwhelming performance.

This was a fourth successive defeat for McCarthy's men and the jeers at full time do not augur well for the veteran boss.

'Cardiff were shocking' - Daily Mail

Bluebirds boss Mick McCarthy saw his team booed off at both half-time and the final whistle and he was taunted by his own fans with chants of 'You're getting sacked in the morning.'

West Brom were ahead in just the fifth minute. Grant was fed by Adam Reach on the edge of the box. Cardiff captain Sean Morrison backed off fatally and Grant fired home.

Cardiff supporters booed as Aden Flint launched an awful long ball forward in search of a response and it would be kind to say his team were second best.

Cardiff were shocking. Their players looked uncomfortable in possession and Robinson worked Dillon Phillips again before the break although this time his shot was much weaker.

West Brom had to produce some last-gasp defending to stop Leandro Bacuna from tapping home at the start of the second half as the Baggies nearly shot themselves in the foot.

Skipper Jake Livermore got back to save the day and it proved crucial as West Brom then made it 2-0. Grant's cross from the left was clawed out by Dillon Phillips, Cardiff fluffed their chances to clear, and Nelson shanked an awful attempt to avert the danger into his own net.

Both Cardiff and Baggies fans reacted by mocking McCarthy in cruel fashion.

Jordan Hugill missed a sitter which would have inflicted more pain on Cardiff, but a stunning third from Mowatt was a deserved reward for the visitors.

Mowatt's 25-yard half volley with his left foot after Cardiff cleared a Darnell Furlong cross was the icing on the cake for West Brom and completed a night of home misery for those of a Welsh persuasion and there was still time for Matt Phillips to tap home at the far post late on.

McCarthy vulnerable - The Times

The home side have now lost six of their past seven matches — and four in a row— leaving McCarthy appearing vulnerable after only eight months in charge. His team were booed off and chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” were taken up by both sets of supporters.

Cardiff created little apart from some set-piece skirmishes and were repeatedly picked apart when they lost possession. Their defence, a strength under McCarthy last season, has now leaked 18 goals in 10 games — the second highest total conceded in the Championship — and this defeat followed their 5-1 thrashing away to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

But he also suggested that the chants from the home fans predicting his sacking had hurt.

'Humiliation' - The Athletic

From a side with a missing mojo to history-makers in two games, Ismael’s Albion are a step closer to becoming the “complete team” he set himself the challenge of creating when he took charge at The Hawthorns this summer.
