MY VIEW: BELLS DOES NOT WANT TO WORK UNDER TAN END OFF.

The new Cardiff City manager candidates club will consider as Craig Bellamy and Man City bolter in the frame
Mick McCarthy's days are over as Bluebirds boss, but who might the hierarchy be thinking about as his successor?

SATURDAY 23 OCT 2021

But who comes in next?

Do Cardiff go for another experienced hand to dig them out of this mess, or does Vincent Tan take a punt on a visionary younger manager to take the club forward with more easy on the eye football?

We assess some of the names in the frame Tan is likely to be considering, including one out of the blue candidate...

Chris Wilder

He was spotted at Fulham on Wednesday night as Cardiff lost 2-0.

So, football being what it is, everyone started putting two and two together.

Wilder has previously interested Cardiff and Tan admires the stellar work he did in taking Sheffield United into the Premier League, then leading them to a ninth-placed finish.

Left with the Blades struggling at the foot of the table last season, but possesses impressive pedigree.

Prospects: He's available, his is a name that would greatly appeal to the Cardiff hierarchy. It would probably come down to finance.

Chris Wilder is one of the men thought to be on Cardiff City's radar

Chris Hughton
Not a figure that will thrill some Bluebirds fans, who would see it as same old, same old given his penchant for defensive football.

But City legend Nathan Blake once argued Hughton would have been the best in transition manager after Neil Warnock, mixing route one with more of a passing game.

You can't go from one extreme to another, Blakey pointed out. Hughton would be the compromise candidate to stabilise the ship for a while, with a younger manager more in tune with modern day football demands then coming in to take things to the next level.

Hughton failed this season with Nottingham Forest, but he has won promotion at Championship level with Brighton and Newcastle and managed in the Premier League.

Prospects: Another who's available if Cardiff want an experienced hand.

Craig Bellamy and Mark Bowen

The Welsh ticket. The pair of them together, or Bellamy on his own.

Bowen has broken away from Mark Hughes' coat-tails, is keen to become a manager in his own right and has been interested in the Bluebirds job.

His name alone might not appeal to some City fans, but were he able to bring local idol Bellamy on board as No.2, it could prove a deal clincher.

Bellamy, it is claimed, would not work with Vincent Tan. However, there are always ways and means around these kind of problems - particularly as the future of Cardiff City FC is what matters most and the two men could help one another in that regard.

Bowen could deal with managing upstairs, so to speak, enabling Bellamy to concentrate on the players and bringing fire, brimstone, passion and a creative spark back into that dressing room.

On the other hand, Tan might be interested in Bellamy full stop.

Yes he lacks managerial experience, but at some point Cardiff may just need to take a punt.

Because of who he is, Bellamy would be afforded more latitude by the fans than anyone else.

There are few greater students of the tactical game and he would certainly change the philosophy in terms of how the team play.

No-one knows the City youngsters better. Bellamy always gushed about the talent in the Academy and was exasperated when teenagers were ignored at first team level.

Prospects: Bellamy is the man many City fans feel would galvanise everyone again. Could he work with Tan? Does he want it?

Ryan Lowe

A name that had started to do the rounds on the soccer grapevine for a a week or so.

Lowe had an unsung playing career in the lower leagues, but is making his mark with two promotions and in taking an unheralded group of Plymouth players to top of League One this season whilst working to tight budgets.

At 43, he would fit the bill as the young, hungry manager many Cardiff fans covet.

As would Bellamy, of course.

Lowe's style of football is out of the textbook of Jurgen Klopp and Pepo Guardiola, a pressing game, adventurous wingers, looking for goals in a somewhat novel 3-1-4-2 formation.

There is no suggestion Lowe would wish to leave Plymouth, but Cardiff are clearly a bigger club and it would represent a huge challenge for him.

Prospects: Compensation to Plymouth might prove a stumbling block, but don't rule this one out.

Michael Duff

Another younger manager who has started making his mark, in Duff's case with Cheltenham who he took up into League One last season.

Like Lowe he isn't as well known as most of the others on this list, but that doesn't mean he won't be considered.

He is contracted until 2023, so again compensation would be an issue.

Prospects: A name that will definitely crop up in conversations.

Michael Flynn
The successful former Newport County manager is out of work and certainly wouldn't cost as much to hire as some of the others, which in a period of transition might suit Tan.

At 40 he is a little younger than Lowe and Duff, is on Cardiff's doorstep and it would be an easy deal to get done.

Whether Cardiff fans would want that, and whether it's too big a job for Flynn, is another matter..

Prospects: The demands at a club of Cardiff City's stature are on another galaxy to what was expected of Flynn at Newport.

Gareth Ainsworth
As a former Cardiff player, albeit briefly under Lennie Lawrence, he gets the club. Part of the iconic team who won promotion in 2003, though didn't feature in the Millennium Stadium play-off win versus QPR.

Has been in charge of Wycombe since 2012, won promotion and plays a dynamic brand of football.

Sunderland, Millwall and Preston wanted him, but Ainsworth said it would take "something special" for him to leave Wycombe.

Prospects: There are others much higher in City's pecking order.

Mark Hughes
The natural assumption is Cardiff couldn't afford Sparky and the backroom staff entourage he would wish to bring with him, but he has been out of football for a while and wants to get back in.

As a passionate Welshman, he knows more than most about the huge fan base Cardiff City could tap into if they really took off.

Prospects: Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman knows Hughes well from their Manchester United connections, but this one might be a step too far.

Eddie Newton
He's something of a Cardiff icon, having been part of the legendary Eddie May Class of the 1990s, before going on to coach Chelsea for many years and bring through their youngsters.

Has made it clear this week he would love to manage the Bluebirds, speaking on a podcast with Nathan Blake which appears to have wowed many fans.

Prospects: His name isn't being mentioned within the Boardroom, I'm told.

Mark Hudson
Another Cardiff fans' favourite. He seems keen to break into management, having worked well with David Wagner at Huddersfield and having brief spells as interim boss.

Prospects: Seems something of an outsider at this stage.

Steve Morison
He is doing a decent job with the under-23s and is viewed by some fans as the man to step into the breach.

But it's a world away from doing that with little pressure and expectation at that level compared to what Cardiff would expect in the hurly-burly of the Championship.

Morison's best chance is to impress with good results as caretaker manager.

Prospects: Chairman Mehmet Dalman appeared to rule this out, but a few good performances and who knows?

Brian Barry-Murphy

Who, you might well ask? I had to google the name myself, including checking on the double-barrelled surname.

After a lower league playing career, Barry-Murphy became Rochdale manager for a couple of seasons before quitting to oversee Manchester City's Academy.

In charge of that Elite Development Squad, he is responsible for grooming some of the finest young talents in world football for the big time.

At 43 he is young and, ridiculous though it may sound, some of the football he tried to play at Rochdale earned comparisons up north with Pep Guardiola's Man City - albeit clearly several scales lower down!

Tan has always coveted filling the Cardiff City side with young Welsh players and he might see Barry-Murphy as a figure who can do that - and, as a bonus, have connections to some of the finest young talent around who he might be able to bring to Cardiff.

Developing young players and selling them on for huge profit has been a Cardiff weakness.

Prospects: This one is a real bolt from the blue, but his name has cropped up.

Bellamy won't work for Tan and he's got enough going on in his life at the moment, doesn't need to be heavily involved with football again.

Wales Online know as much about who the club want as the rest of us do but think they have to look as if they know.

Tan, Dalman and Choo can't even agree on someone between them so how are we supposed to know?

It is not a case of Bellamy working for VT but he will not work for anyone at the moment as he just packed in his job abroad because of mental health issues, so does anyone think he would put himself back in the firing line so soon?

Chris Wilder would be my first choice, but if he is not the one then while I hope Steve Morrison does well in the short term I agree that there would be a huge difference in battling in the championship.

On the other hand, I would like a change in style and the prospect of having Brian Barry-Murphy would really do it for me
- he's had management experience
- might have good contacts with Man City for loans
- Man City Acadamy would be a far more pressured role than most so maybe not as much of a step as for Steve Morrison
- Could enable us to have guys with similar ideas and drive for both first-team squad and youngsters coming through

Ted Lasso would be my pick. Can't be any worse than the recent bunch.

The three wise men probably haven't even heard of most of the names mentioned. And certainly won't know of links to us with people like Newton and Ainsworth.

And could be achieved with a draw at Stoke and points from home games against QPR & Huddersfield .

I seem to remember Morison was a tough sort and may not get to phased about his next 3 games , I wonder if he'll lean on his old boss advice Neil Harris ??
