Michael Flynn is currently the bookies favourite, but insiders have played down the chances of the former Newport County boss taking the reins.
The 41-year-old has not yet been categorically ruled out, but it's understood his status as favourite has been well overstated.
Steve Morison is currently being looked at seriously and so is Chris Hughton by the Cardiff City Committee ( Tan / Dalman and Choo).
No decision has yet been made, with rookie duo Michael Beale and Jody Morris also both firmly on the radar, but there is a feeling in some corners of the hierarchy that they could be potentially risky appointments, particularly with the club currently facing up to a possible relegation battle.
As a result, Cardiff City Committee could yet turn their attention to a candidate with real Championship experience in a bid to get things back on track.
Chris Hughton is one of the names who has been mentioned in the Cardiff boardroom, while Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has also been floated.
However, it's understood former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has ruled himself out of the Cardiff job.
Cardiff's search is set to step up in the coming days, but it seems they are essentially facing a decision between appointing a young, dynamic coach capable of changing the team's style and approach, and appointing a battle-hardened Championship manager who can give an under-performing squad the fighting spirit needed to scrap their way out of trouble.
Meanwhile, interim boss Steve Morison's chances have still not been dismissed following Saturday's thrilling 3-3 draw at Stoke City.
The Cardiff Committee says they have rushed before, so they will take their time and eve Ben if it takes another couple of weeks do be it.

Annis you’re right about Flynn. I posted yesterday he wouldn’t be our manager.
He won’t be on the short list.
