James Collins pulls out of Ireland squad

Cardiff striker James Collins has been forced to pull out of Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifiers with Portugal and Luxembourg after suffering a nasty thumb injury.

The forward has endured a disappointing start to life in the Welsh capital, having failed to score in any of his 16 appearances for the Bluebirds.

And that poor run of form in front of goal was compounded last month when it was revealed he "busted" his thumb and had to have screws put into it in order to remedy the problem.

He was perhaps wishfully included in Stephen Kenny's Ireland squad for the forthcoming double header, but has no been ruled out.

Bristol City winger Callum O'Dowda has been brought into the squad in his stead.

Ireland would have to be a bit desperate (and they may be) to play a forward who has failed to score in 16 championship games.
