Steve Morison said he would not simply throw Jai Semenyo in at the deep end if Cody Drameh fails his late fitness test.

Drameh came off at half time against Sheffield United after suffering a bang on his knee and it is unknown whether he will be fit enough to face Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

He has been an everpresent since joining from Leeds in January, with Perry Ng moving inside to a centre-back role. However, Morison said he would have to rejig things if Drameh is unavailable as he does not want to throw Semenyo in at the deep end.

"He is not quite ready yet," Morison said of the 19 year-old. "If Cody doesn’t make it then we will adjust somewhere else. I wouldn’t do that to Jai, they need to be ready. I don’t think he is quite ready for the Riverside, under the lights and on TV on a Wednesday night! But he will get there, just not yet."

Alfie Doughty has gone back to Stoke City, while Sean Morrison and Isaac Vassell are long-term absentees.

Boro, meanwhile, will be without Matt Crooks, who is suspended after picking up 15 yellow cards. Dael Fry is also a doubt as he recovers from a calf injury, while Marcus Tavernier will be assessed ahead of the match.

Match facts:

Middlesbrough

Once again another club this season are looking to complete a league double over Cardiff City for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Cardiff are unbeaten in three away league games against Middlesbrough (W2 D1) since losing three in a row between 2013 and 2016.

Middlesbrough have lost each of their last three league games at the Riverside Stadium, having won each of the previous eight.

In Chris Wilder’s managerial career, he’s only endured a longer such run in the Football League once before, losing five straight games as Sheffield United manger in the Premier League between October and December 2020.

Cardiff have won five of their six midweek games (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) in the Championship in 2022 (L1), this after losing their final six in 2021 without scoring a single goal (12 conceded).

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder is looking for his first managerial league victory over Cardiff, having failed to win his previous two meetings with them in 2017-18 with Sheffield United (D1 L1).
