It’s far too early in the season to get carried away, in

It’s far too early in the season to get carried away, in either direction, and as we all know, after such a massive squad turnover, patience needs to remain in large quantities. On the plus side, there have already been plenty of positives. The new players appear to be bedding in very well and the team has a shiny, new feel about it. That was needed after a period of stagnation.

The new arrivals are generally more dynamic and appear to be hungrier than those who have been replaced. There is more balance, a better blend, a wealth of options and Cardiff are learning to love the ball again. The fact that Cardiff have wingers again also feels like a revelation. What this has yet to yield, though, is greater creativity.

A lack of cutting edge is nothing new. It is the area of the pitch where you tend to get what you pay for and Cardiff have been in a period of cost cutting for many years now.

They lucked out in getting Kieffer Moore for less than his market value, but unfortunately, players of that calibre, at that price, don’t grow on trees.

Cardiff’s expected goals score for the Norwich game was 0.08, which may prove difficult to top over the course of the season. It was a riveting, pulsating game which was almost completely devoid of chances, yet Cardiff still found a breakthrough, albeit with a shot from distance. That number increased to 0.28 at Reading, where Cardiff headed the opener from a set piece and had a shot well saved soon after. It was a fairly meagre return from 180 minutes of football.

Cardiff enjoyed plenty of possession and chances against Portsmouth on Tuesday, but failed to find the back of the net and match their opponent’s potency in front of goal. It is a cause for concern that Morison addressed post-Reading.

“It’s the hardest bit of the pitch,” Morison admitted. "It’s the toughest part to get right. You want to get them to that area, but there are only so many patterns and movements you can work on. The tough thing for us is that you’ve got Ollie Tanner’s first game at this level, Jaden Philogene’s first game of his pre-season, Rubin’s [Colwill] come on for his first minutes of the whole of pre-season. Mark Harris and Gavin Whyte, it’s their first starts, so it takes time.”

As highlighted above, there are plenty of mitigating factors to consider. A lot of Cardiff’s creatives are short of match practice and some are new to this level. It will take a little bit of time for them to tune in to each others wavelengths and adjust to Morison’s methods.

In the past, there have been times that the Cardiff side has more or less picked itself, but that is certainly not the case this season. There is a wealth of options and an abundance of variables available to Morison, so it will be interesting to see how much he decides to tinker or how loyal he remains to certain players. The introduction of five substitutes also means that there will be more in-game adjustments than ever before, too.
