Cardiff City got back to winning ways courtesy of a maiden Bluebirds goal from Jaden Philogene which downed Birmingham City 1-0 in the Welsh capital.

The Bluebirds displayed some swashbuckling stuff at times, which was really pleasing on the eye, but left a huge number of goals out there owing to some terrible missed chances.

Fortunately for them, though, Philogene's first-half strike was enough to get Steve Morison's men back on the victory trail, with a bit of a swagger, too.

Cardiff started the game in blistering fashion. Pinging off passes like bullets out of a machine gun and making all the right decisions with the ball at their feet. In the baking sun, they would have spoke about wanting the visitors to do their lion's share of chasing shadows and that's just what they did.

And all that positive and exciting build-up play looked to have manifested itself in the first goal of the game when Callum O'Dowda fizzed in a low cross to Romaine Sawyers, but his first-time shot was saved well before Max Watters failed to bundle in the rebound.

But it was all positive from a Cardiff standpoint. The midfield dominated and both wing-backs were sensational, running like their lives depended on it, overlapping their wingers and defending their own goal with aplomb.

It was O'Dowda, though, who made the goal. He was played in with an inch-perfect pass from Ryan Wintle and the winger rifled a cross across the six-yard box. It whizzed past Watters but Philogene was there to tap in the easiest of chances.

Birmingham fired very few shots off in the first half, however they sent a warning to the hosts when Troy Deeney sent through Scott Hogan, only for the striker to be felled at the last second by a fantastic Jamilu Collins tackle.

But the miss of the half came by virtue of Max Watters. It was that man O'Dowda again who architected the chance, slotting through the striker clean on goal. But his effort was one of a man shorn of confidence, dithering and indecisive. He let off a tame, side-footed strike and John Ruddy saved well.

There was a groan of frustration. He just needed a goal, one to bounce off his thigh and into the net. Anything, just to get him going, but nothing was coming and he was hauled off at the break.

Cardiff started the second half brightly, too, O'Dowda seeing two chances from close range blocked. But then came a particularly hairy moment for the hosts when Hogan was sprinting through on goal. Kipre challenged clumsily but Darren Bond waved away the claims. Hogan was then booked for his protestations. It certainly looked as though Cardiff had gotten away with one.

The visitors just got their toe into the game midway through the second half and Cardiff weren't enjoying the sort of dominance they had in the first hour of the game.

Cardiff, though, forged another gaping chance to put the game to bed courtesy of some brilliant work by Mark Harris down the left. The winger beat his man and stood a gorgeous ball up to the back post, where he found Kion Etete. But the striker's header from just a couple of yards out was wide of the mark.

On another day, and against better opposition, this catalogue of missed opportunities would have come back to bite them. But it could be a whole lot worse than six points from three games, that's for sure.
