O’Dowda suffers injury blow

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny has confirmed that Cardiff City star Callum O’Dowda has been ruled out of the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier with France.

The Bluebirds man has pulled up with a suspected groin injury, and the decision to call up Robbie Brady has only emphasised the level of concern around his condition.

Confirming the news, Kenny said: “Callum O’Dowda has picked up a groin strain so Robbie Brady joined the squad last night.”

The news will likely spark anxiety in the Welsh capital. O’Dowda has been one of City’s brighter performers in recent weeks, and will have likely been a part of Sabri Lamouchi’s plans ahead of what could be a crucial run of games.

The Bluebirds return to action on Saturday in the South Wales derby, against a Swansea side that have won each of the last three meetings between the two teams.

Jay Fulton says Swansea City know exactly what the South Wales derby means to the club’s fans.

The Swans head to the Cardiff City Stadium following the international break for a highly anticipated derby day clash.

And the midfielder has warned the Bluebirds his side don’t need to be reminded of the fixture’s importance.

“I think it is a game that takes care of itself in terms of mentality, you don’t need to build it up because we know what is at stake and what it means,” he said.

“It’s a good game to be looking forward to after the international break.

“To be going into it on the back of the win over Bristol City is massive for us. Hopefully we can take a bit of confidence into that game.

“From there we want to be able to go on and finish the season well.”

I've been told Callum's groin strain appears to be minor, I hope so as he's been outstanding and we need him fir for Saturday.

All train strikes scheduled for this day have now been suspended (good news for me as it means I'm able to go to the game now, same for many others), 3pm kick off on a Saturday and not on Sky.

So no excuse for people not to go. I know the club said 24,000 tickets has been sold but hopefully many more will decide to go over the next few days.

The team need a big crowd to support them for this one :bluebird:

Sabri Lamouchi says he's hopeful of being able to call upon Callum O'Dowda for Saturday's South Wales derby with Swansea City.

However, it seems Callum Robinson has fallen short in his race to be fit as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring issue.

Robinson has been out for just over a month, but there was seemingly plenty of optimism that he might be back in contention after the international break

However, Lamouchi says Cardiff's top scorer, who was sent off after seven minutes in the reverse fixture at the Swansea.com Stadium earlier in the season, will not be fit in time to face Russell Martin's charges.

"Callum Robinson will be out for the Swansea game," Lamouchi said. "He will not be available.

"It was serious as you know against Reading. It was a serious injury. We tried with our medical department to do our best and to find Callum back with us as soon as possible."

Robinson's absence will unquestionably be seen as a major blow for the Bluebirds, but there's better news on fellow Irishman O'Dowda.

The former Bristol City man sparked concern after pulling out of the Republic of Ireland squad for the recent Euro 2024 qualifier with France, with boss Stephen Kenny suggesting the player was suffering from a potential groin injury.

O'Dowda has been one of Cardiff's brighter performers this season, and Lamouchi is seemingly optimistic about the 27-year-old's prospects of featuring this weekend.

The Frenchman is also hopeful of having Romaine Sawyers and Mahlon Romeo will back in training on Friday after their respective returns from international duty.

"Callum O’Dowda is with us today," he added. "Romaine Sawyers and Mahlon Romeo are coming today but will not be in training with us. But I hope they’ll be available tomorrow.

"He (O'Dowda) will train apart today. He looked okay. We will see tomorrow with him. I’m absolutely confident he’ll be okay."

Very tight odds. I think a draw or a win for us.

Nervous but looking forward to it. Last season I was there for the 4-0 defeat and don't want to feel that pain again.
