A Rangers fan who scarred a Celtic physio for life after throwing a bottle at him during an Old Firm game has been jailed for 12 months.

Alan Crawford, 33, of Grangemouth, launched the missile from the west enclosure at Ibrox Stadium on April 3, 2022. It struck Daniel Friel on the head causing a bleeding wound which required four stitches.

Celtic would go on to win the tie 2-1 with Cameron Carter-Vickers netting the winner in the first half. Crawford pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Friel to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

"The throwing of a bottle was not only an act of mindless violence but it had significant consequences for the person you injured and will stay with him for the rest of his life.

"The court must ensure that this grave conduct at events such as this is discouraged and the public protected. A custodial sentence is the only appropriate method to deal with you due to the gravity of the offence and the use of a bottle as a weapon.

"There were serious consequences to your actions and the victim. The court has to have regard to these circumstances at a sporting event towards a member of staff."

Part of the reason this is important to me at this time is the arruval of the scummy 'Jacks' on Saturday. It was their 'fans' that bombarded 117/118 with coins and other shrapnel last time they were here. Several people, including a lady who sits near us, suffered substantial head injuries that could and might have been a lot lot more serious...

Sadly, on that occasion, too many of the Stewards did little or nothing to stop the barrage from that side whilst jumping on anyone who remonstrated from our side

It is something that I have noted a fair bit since and at the last game, we saw a glass bottle miss our own Forever Blue by a whisker before smashing on the floor, whilst 'home' supporters were routinely sanctioned for simply having a voice

Those who know me will tell you I am a big supporter of our great Stewards in the main (they do an incredible and largely thankless task) but there are a few who 'get into role' with a little too much enthusiasm and disrespect for the very people for whom they have a duty of care i.e. the supporters in their areas

Many in 117/118 will know one particular (not so young) individual who treats 'home' supporters (particularly the young) with disrespect. My guess is he is probably 'hen-pecked' at home and needs the release...

Why is the steward allowed to get away with it, report him or flatten him, cannot stand jumped up jobsworths who think they can treat people with disrespect because they are a steward, fecking boils my blood. He probably treats the young like because he is a bully!
