A fan who sent racist tweets to his team's striker after it was announced he was switching sides has been banned from watching football matches.
Lifelong season ticket holder Josh Phillips, 26, launched the racist attack against Swans striker Michael Obafemi in response to announcement of his loan move to Championship rivals Burnley - calling the Dublin player the N word. The 26-year-old hastily deleted the tweet following an angry response from fellow fans, but was later tracked down by police.
Obafemi, who joined the Swans in 2021 from Southampton, later said the abuse he received was extremely distressing for him and his family. Phillips, of Fern Street, Cwmbwrla, previously pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared in court earlier this month.
He was back before magistrates on Friday to face the music - and looked ashen faced as the severity of the offence was laid out in court. Swansea Magistrates Court heard he had been drinking alcohol with friends on the day of the offence and sent a "grossly offensive, abusive and racially aggravated" tweet over Twitter.
He said he later realised the gravity of his Tweet and deleted it, before deleting his account. However the Tweet had already been viewed and had seen responses from various other Twitter users. The court heard that since he posted the racist tweet, he had lost friends and was also sacked from his place of work.
Ahead of sentencing, magistrates had warned Phillips that custody was a possible option. However, JPs decided to hand him a 12 week jail term - suspended for 18 months. He must also complete 120 days of an alcohol activity monitoring requirement, 25 rehabilitation activity days and up to 160 hours of unpaid work.
He was also been made the subject of a football Banning Order. For the next three years. Phillips is not permitted within the Swansea.Com Stadium - or licensed premises eg. pubs within 2500m of the ground - on days of Swansea City matches. He is also not permitted to attend away games or venture to the town or city where Swansea City is playing an away game on a match day. In addition, Phillips is not permitted to attend any Wales games for the next three years, or attend the town or city where Wales is playing an away game on a match day. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £154.

Doesn’t seem right that he should be rewarded for his racism by not having to watch the jerks play anymore.
