MATCH THRE: " SHEFFIELD UNITED v CARDIFF CITY " MATCH THREAD

Tue Apr 11, 2023 2:00 pm

SHEFFIELD UNITED v CARDIFF CITY
Saturday 15th April, 12.30pm
Sky Bet Championship
Bramall Lane

Sheffield United's first choice goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is suspended after being sent off against Burnley.

The Blades have lost just one of their last five games, against Burnley, winning the other four.

Four changes:

Sabri Lamouchi has decided to shuffle his pack for this one, which is perhaps unsurprising given the standard of performance against Sunderland.

Romeo, Wickham, Sawyers and Ojo all drop to the bench, with Etete, Ralls, Simpson and Kipre all coming in.

Not entirely sure on the shape, but suspect it will be three at the back with Simpson and Philogene playing the wing-back roles.

Cardiff fans can pay on the day.

Sadly this is a guaranteed defeat. Not because its Sheffield Utd (they're not amazing) we simply have no character or guts to pull off a shock. All I want to see is that we keep defeat to one goal and limit any injuries. 1 v 0 will be a good result. Goal difference could save us on the last day. Really sad this is now the grim reality of following City.

No matter how much huff and puff our team decide to give, I can't see us keeping out the Sheffield attack for 90 minutes.
A minimum of 2-0 defeat.

Sabri Lamouchi provided a full injury break down ahead of the club's trip up to Sunderland this weekend.

He hopes to have a mostly full squad from which to choose on Saturday, however they are waiting on Rubin Colwill's hip injury. Lamouchi said he would speak to the medical team ahead of training on Thursday morning.

"For the moment we don't have any players out. We have some small problems, but everyone should be training today," added the head coach.

"For me, when you finish a game, you can start another one. But sometimes you get some small problems and you can't. That was the case with the captain. He finished very well (against Sunderland) and I hope he will be available for Saturday."

On Callum O'Dowda, he said: "He should be on the (training) pitch today. With me, he has been more out (of the team) than in, unfortunately for me!"

Ebou Adams trained on the pitch at Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday during the club's open day. But when asked if he had any chance of featuring this season, Lamouchi said: "It was his first session with us yesterday. So, we will see."

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom has branded Cardiff City's football under Sabri Lamouchi "a lot more direct" than when they last faced them.

Mark Hudson was in charge when the Blades beat the Bluebirds 1-0 at Cardiff City Stadium back in November, but it's been all change since then.

Speaking about Cardiff under Lamouchi, Heckingbottom said: "It's been different of late, they've been playing a lot longer and lot more direct.

"It's simple in what we are going to face. We are going to have to deal with that and balls on to our back line and into our box and do all the things we pride ourselves on and do them really well, and then, with the ball, we want the same approach as we had against Wigan.
"

On the prospect of Cardiff scrapping for their Championship survival, he added: "That's what we saw against Wigan, you know it's a cup final for Wigan and it will be for Cardiff because they need the points.

"That's why every game is tough at this stage of the season. We have been preparing for this and building for it. We are not taking any game lightly at all, playing against a side who are scrapping and fighting and who will make it as difficult as possible for us
."

Meanwhile, Heckingbottom confirmed Max Lowe is back available for the Blades for the visit of Cardiff this weekend.

Boss Paul Heckingbottom has backed goalkeeper Adam Davies who he says is ready for his opportunity ahead of United's Championship clash with Cardiff City.

With Wes Foderingham banned following his red card against Burnley last time out, the experienced Davies is ready to deputise ahead of the visit of the Bluebirds.

Having stepped in for three Championship games and three FA Cup ties earlier in the campaign, Heckingbottom believes his previous outings during the season will stand him in good stead as United prepare for two home games in quick succession.

The Blades boss also confirmed Max Lowe has trained fully as he looks to return following two games out.

SHEFF UTD - Team News - Enda Stevens' continued absence. With Ben Osborn also missing, George Baldock has been out of position at left wing-back. Heckingbottom also confirmed that pair's absence for this game: "No, they are not back," the Blades boss said of Stevens and Osborn.

They join Rhys Norrington-Davies and Rhian Brewster on the sidelines, with that duo long-term casualties with hamstring problems.

Brewster is out for the season, yet there's a chance we could see Norrington-Davies again before the campaign is up.

"They are continuing (with rehab)," Heckingbottom revealed.

"Rhian is not (expected to be back this season) and Rhys, we will see."

Sheffield are missing a number of players due to injury…… but really only 2 would have been starters if fit.

They are Jack 0’connell (C1/2) and Steven Enda (LB) . On the left side they are now having to play a right back (Baldock) .

This means that we have an advantage and can attack on the right side and catch Baldock on the wrong foot.

They will probably play three C1/2s ….. so have some cover ….but our right flanks can keep getting balls in their box … the whole damn day.

Sheffield United:

I think I got it wrong .

Their natural 1st choice left back Edna is injured but they now have Max Lowe who is a good wingback …who was injured and is now back fit . I expect him to start. Their first choice keeper Foderingham is suspended … but the replacement Davies is good enough and is no slouch.
