Most fearful you’ve been at a football match

Thu Apr 20, 2023 6:05 pm

Annis recent posts about the Newport friendly got me thinking. That for me was the most fearful I’ve been at a football match in 30 years of following Cardiff, and I’ve been to some scary places.

There was a spattering of Cardiff in the stand that day and about 20-30 blokes started walking around towards us. As a young, naive 18 year old I assumed they were Cardiff, it wasn’t until they got close that they started hurling abuse at one of the lads I was standing with. “You’ve been mouthing on the ITK website” blah blah blah.

They were evil and could have easily wiped the floor with us but for some reason they thankfully didn’t.

Followed closely by a friendly in Llanelli around the same time where a load of jacks turned up. They started bullying my mate and I and luckily some of the local Cardiff helped us out.

QPR away a few years ago. Around about 5th November. On the way back to coaches along South Africa Road. Plod in the middle of the road trying to keep fans apart.

Loads more coppers on our side of the road barely managing to control their vicious, barking, snarling police dogs and the residents of the blocks of flats on the left aiming and throwing fireworks at the City fans whilst the plod just let them carry on.

Birmingham back in the early 70's.We got ambushed coming out of the station. To my shame, as a 13 year old I scarpered along with all the other schooligans and hid in a TV shop waiting for it all to die down. The walk to and back from the ground was a real fearful journey. For the older ones on this forum they will remember Peggy. Unfortunately he couldn't run so he and a handful of the older lads were left to fight it out against hundreds of Brummies.

My was half time at Bristol rovers away. While queuing for a pie at half time I could see there was only 2 left but still a good 12 hungry blokes ahead. I was shiting myself I wouldn’t get a pie.

Millwall away in the late 70s & it wasn't the hooligans who scared me the most, it was the old guys with their walking sticks and whatever else they could use smacking anyone who looked like a Cardiff fan, one of them broke my mates arm he whacked him so hard.

Simon, that day for me was one most bullying days I’ve ever seen, been involved in, they were doing it all day Newport, 20 on to 1 or 2 Cardiff fans including myself.

1978 West Ham Away with Cardiff, I was a kid, we were attacked in the away end, at the end of the game attacked again, outside afterwards attacked again, got on our coaches and smashed us again. It was unbelievable, 800 Cardiff were there as well, West Ham were on another level.

We played Tottenham home in a cup game about 1977. I left before the final whistle to avoid any trouble, the Tottenham fans were in the enclosure. As I walked out the exit from the Grange end the Tottenhams fans were exiting the enclosure and heading to the Grange and me on my own. One of them started laying punches into me, I parried most of the punches off and as he wasnt getting anywhere, he must have got bored and took off after the rest of his mates into the Grange end. I walked off, but my anger was rising, and to such an extent that I turned around and went after the guy that had laid into me. I was in the middle of the Tottenham fans, guys on the floor being kicked, and the police getting involved in numbers. The police blocked the grange from Sloper road and rounded up the Tottenham fans with me in the middle still looking for one particular tottenham fan. Having rounded up the away fans the police marched them off - including me and my scarf showing around my neck. My anger by now was subsiding and by the time we reached Ninian Park road I was Sh--ing myself. I pulled my scarf under my coat, and edged my way to the police cordon then managed to escape luckily unharmed.

Yes mate I’d agree, didn’t seem like we expected them to turn up like they did.

I wasn’t born then sadly, would have loved to have been born ten years earlier as strange as that sounds

I was working in Italy and went to Bari v lecce, I was with Bari and the lecce ultras were incredibly impressive - knives and bats etc. genuinely thought there would be deaths that day. Police seemed happy to let the violence continue as lecce came across the terrace towards Bari, toe to toe for ages.
I haven’t witnessed anything like it since.

Went on the Shed with with about 10 West Ham fans(one my mate), thinking, keep mouth shut etc.. next thing, one of them bellows out ‘Come on you Irons’. Cue about 100 Chelsea coming down the terrace looking. Remember one saying ‘C’mon West Ham, we know ya here’.. slowly sidled off to the West Stand.

Culinary fears were running out of white pepper at the Bob Bank/Grange tea bar. Made for a very disappointing oxo.

1977 Wales vs Scotland at Anfield. On the road leading to Anfield and Scottish coaches were passing us waving knives. Not a good start to a day that just got worse. In the Kop end which was supposed to be just Welsh fans but it seemed like we were outnumbered 20 to 1 by the Scots. Everything started flying over at us. Full cans and bottles, lots of bottles. Everywhere there seemed to be people bleeding. Luckily, as I am a shortass the constant barrage seemed to miss me. Getting on the coach after the game somebody said you're covered in blood so I then assumed I was hit. Eventually got home, had a shower and was glad to find it wasn't my blood but some poor bugger who must have been next to me.

Sold out by the Welsh FA who had it moved to Anfield just so they could get more revenue. Didn't give a shit about the Welsh supporters or qualifying or even the safety of our supporters as, apparently, it was them who sold tickets to the Scots for the Kop.

Agree about the Welsh FA.. but I think Wales were banned from playing within 150 miles of Ninian Park after serious crowd trouble at the 76 Yugoslavia game.

Probably the other week down CCS when I made eye contact with Dai Hunt and he made his way over to me to engage in conversation.

You are correct about Ninian Park being banned but that was for European games only and this was a World Cup game. The reason it was moved was because the safety of sport act had just been brought in and Ninian Parks capacity was greatly reduced from 50K to about 20k. The Welsh FA took the decision that they would rather have the money than qualify for the World Cup and believed the North Wales public would turn out in their thousands which they didn't. I was on the Kop that night and yes it was frightening.

Cardiff reward was a massive bill for compliance with the Act which other clubs outside the top division didn't have to comply with and Wrexham's reward for not turning out was most international matches being played at the Racecourse for the next 6 years :banghead:

I still say that that Act was a major reason behind our 25 years of decline until Sam took over.

Well that makes sense. Was a sad day when the old Grange went. If Alun Evans was around, it becomes even clearer. They were in charge of tickets.

A worrying situation indeed, almost as bad as him sitting behind you with a bald head. Spit and polish time.

Not at a football match but coming home from Swindon we foolishly stopped off at Newport, 5 of us went into the wetherspoons in town , we went to the bar as we order I looked around there was about 50 of there lads in there , my mate Lewis straight away had a chair thrown over his head , the whole bar emptied the chairs , glasses and anything they could hey there hands on at us , we left sharpish with the bar staff through the rear fire exit , made the local pub saying cardiff fans smashed up the pub when infact it was there , any way 3 weeks later coming back from a London game 6 coaches of Valley rams stopped in Newport and not a Newport fan insight.

I actually thought I was going to die on the Grange end at the final whistle of Cardiff v Leeds. A jam packed arguably overcrowded Grange end everyone charged forward towards the pitch. I noticed a young boy must of been 11-12 on the floor, I pulled him up but because of everyone charging forward I went down myself, was getting trampled all over my head everything. I remember thinking "shit im gonna die" luckily I heard someone shout there's someone on the floor and I got pulled up. As the terrace emptied slightly realised I only had one trainer on. Some lad noticed it and said "it's down there with a steward" have a hat as well" and put a cap on my head. I left the ground limping and cut up. Must of been about 19/20 at the time. Still buzzing we won but felt a bit messed up at the same time.
I love a terrace and loved the Grange end and still went in a packed out Grange many times after. We were going through good times on the pitch. But understand a packed over crowded terrace is potentially very dangerous. Also leaning against the steel terrace posts, when a goal goes in everyone charges forward and you get squeezed against the post, feel like your stomachs gonna come out your mouth. But yeah our old home Ninian is the most fearful I've been. My last game their was the last but one home game v Swansea and I got thrown out so thought better stay away from the last home game, felt It was a fitting way to finish my time at Ninian. Miss her tho.
