Rebuilding -Who goes and who stays?

Sun Apr 30, 2023 1:19 pm

I am pretty clear that Sabri needs to stay AND Sabri needs to rebuild…..I think its time to nominate 5 to go and 5 we build a team around.
For what its worth this is mine-
Stayers
Etete - Kipre - Philogene - Mc Guiness - O Dowda

Leavers
Most of the leavers are attackers. We had the worst scoring record in the divisuon until Kaba / Etete combined at the end.
I liked Etete from the outset as stated on several threads. Sabri saw the potential and still more potential there. I think Sabri will see that Davies can be an important player next year.

Ojo - Watters - Wickham - Robinson - Simpson :bluebird:
Wickham is too old and done precious little since arriving. Ojo flatters to decieve. He is definately not a wing back(!!) but where is he effective? The others not good enough. .I am also not entirely sure whether Colwell should stay, but if he can stay fit and work harder, he has plenty of talent. Sabri may get a tune out of him. Also Sawyers (another year older) may just be a useful squad player.
I realize that 90% will disagree about Robinson, but, for me, he does nothing particularly well and was not good enough for WBA. Imo we havent missed him, and may get a 1/2 decent feefor him

Over to you Tan and Sabri :bluebird:

Really hope we can keep Kipre and Philogene really like both. Unlikely tho. The board need to sort this club out as can't be dealing with the same next season.

Leavers for me…Ojo,Simpson,Romeo,Wickham,Alnwick,Harris, to start

Only 5 to go... That's too hard. For me I would get rid of Alsopp, Bagan, Simpson, Sang, Ojo, Sawyers, Watters, Sparky, Rubin.

There's probably more. But I can't think of the players we got left

Agree with this list.

We don't have options guys, all those going back to their parent club will, then there is Harris, Wickham, WHyte, Bagan and Sang

Decisions on extended contracts for those going at the end of next season need to be made

Extend or transfer list
Wintle,NG, McGuiness, Colwill, Collins, Denham

Run out
Sawyers, Ojo, Alsop,Allwick, Simpson, Ralls (he'll extend)

Not even worried after

Agree with this but I’d keep Rubin as I think there’s championship level quality in there .

So clear that Cardiff need to ship out so many players this summer.

Simpson, Ojo, Wickham , Watters should all go. Harris, Sang , Bagan, Denhim and Whyte can join them. Just not good enough. Jury remains out on Sawyers and Alnwick.

I like Sawyers, I like what he brings on a good day but sadly I don't think he's got 90 mins in his legs or 2 games in a week anymore. But City do look a more joined up and fluid side when he's in it.If he goes we need to get the same type of player in as no one else is capable at his type of game. His replacement won't come cheap.

I might add we might have to keep several of the players discussed if the purse strings are not loosened.

Ojo, Simpson, Alsopp, Wintle, Sang, Wickham, Sawyers bye bye.

I hope so though I've not seen him play yet so I don't know if he's the same type as Sawyers or any better.I'd be happy if he's a younger version who's just as good. To be fair to Romain in his pomp he was premier league quality.

Ebu Adams and Collins will be like new signings
Robinson will score for us if stays fit
I personally would not miss most of the others in truth bar philogene and Kipre (who will almost certainly not come back)

Re: Rebuilding -Who goes and who stays?

Can't say I have too much faith in any one of the squad this season, they have just about all been very inconsistent; although I can't see another major clear-out with new recruits coming in like last summer.

However, a few I would keep.

I like O'Dowda, but only as a wide forward. Although, he does seem injury prone.
Obviously Collins looked the business before his injury.
McGuiness still could become a quality Centre back.
Robinson will score goals if he can remain injury free.
Finally, I'd give both Colwill and Isaak Davies plenty of game time early next season. I still think they could have a lot to offer if they can remain injury free. It would be a shame to offload either of them, just to see them hit the ground running for another team!
The rest are lower half Championship footballers at best!

Finally, I'd be surprised if any of the lads on loan will want to return as they'll be looking to move up a standard and our club is standing still, if not going backwards!

Re: Rebuilding -Who goes and who stays?

With 5 going their replacements need to be oven-ready starters. I think Watters will move on as well, so it may be 6. Hopefully, Ojo realizes this is not for him and asks to leave, it be worth dropping him a few quid to move on

1 centre forward
2 wide FAST forwards
2 centre halfs

Expensive, but it can't be scattergun.

Full backs we have starters and cover
CM's 5 stoppers and Colwill as flair

We have nothing up top except Robinson, Etete has improved but from a low base.

McGuinness looks lost in a 3, I think he'd be better in a tight back 4 with an experienced leader next to him

Re: Rebuilding -Who goes and who stays?

I always look at what we have and who we should keep so we can build a squad around them.

I would keep Collins, Robinson, Adams, O'Dowda, McGuinness, Ng, Wintle and Rinomhota.

I would like to keep the 3 loanees but I can't see that happening. If we had to spend money to keep one it would be Kaba.

Etete, Colwill and Davies I think I would loan out tbh.

The rest are not good enough or their time is up.

I think our priority is 2 midfielders, a central back and a striker if we cannot keep Kaba.

Re: Rebuilding -Who goes and who stays?

Mon May 01, 2023 8:03 pm

Its a matter of opinions.
Etete 21 years old. He showed potential and when trusted(by Sabri) improved game on game. Then in THE key game at Rotherham he stepped up and (along with Kipre) was outstanding. Suely a lot more potential for next year.

Compare Callum Robinson who is 28 and has never quite “made” it. He scored a few goals during our long losing run under Hudson(!)
I have a friend who is a WBA fan and he (along with most of their fanbase) was over the moon that we bought him. A last minute transfer window buy after failing to get other strikers in.
But leaving aside all that…. One striker closes down when not in possession (Etete), while the other gives an impression of closing down, but rarely ever does, and doesn’t “mark” anyone (Robinson). The least I demand is some hard yards by City players!

For me, its no contest which of the two we should keep. :bluebird: :bluebird:

Wintle but not Ralls?

I’d see if we could get a fee from Sheffield Wednesday for McGuinness if they go up.

Also would see if any team would pay up for Wintle as I think he’s been absolutely terrible since Morison left, in fairness his role has changed to become more mobile and he just doesn’t seem up to it.

I’d let Allsop, Simpson, Ojo, Sang, Whyte and Wickham go.

Harris has looked a handful whenever he’s played cutting in from the left so I’d like to keep him on and try him with Collins behind him providing an overlap option and cover. Same with O’Dowda with Romeo behind on the other side.

We are in transfer ban, so say goodbye to any loaned players. AND out of contracted players.
Personally I would build around the youngsters we have like Isaak Davies, mark Harris (if he can stay) and colwill.
Ignoring there qualities has not helped the club.

COVID might be the thing that helps us, clubs are cost cutting massively now, more players will be out of contract than they normally would had covid not been around. WBA are in serious financial problems should they fail to get promoted, players like Kipre might be offered for nothing, Premier league clubs like City, Arsenal and liverpool are now sending their youngsters on loan to these clubs rather than european clubs which might work in our favour. there is a nucleus of a decent team in there, Romeo, Ng, Collins, Wintle (Adams, might be a great lad) Davies, Robbo. just need to add soem quality to it
