Darren Purse: "The future is bright"

Cardiff under-21s manager praised the young defenders he entrusted for the 4-2 victory over Crewe Alexandra yesterday and believes the future could be bright for City.

In their last game of the season, captain Owen Pritchard netted twice while Cian Ashford and Japhet Matondo rounded off the scoring in the triumph in Leckwith.

Looking ahead to next season, Purse opted to play a number of under-18s and first-year scholars for the clash, including inexperienced defenders Josh Beecher, Luey Giles and Dylan Lawlor.

Speaking about the final-day win, Purse said: "I think it's a good way to end the season. Going forwards we showed some good bits of quality; we scored four and maybe could've gotten more as well.

"On the back end of that, we've conceded two sloppy goals, but that's a learning curve for the young back four that we had. You look at that back four, and three of them are first-year scholars, so from that point of view you look at it and you think that the future is bright.

"Overall we had some really good bits of possession that I was pleased with, and it's nice to end the season with three points whilst giving some experience to some young scholars that should now be looking to push on and be involved with the U21s next year."

U17, U18 have got some very promising players.

Yes, but they are not trained by Darren Purse, I have not been impressed with the u21 this season and the last win was with mostly the u18s. we do need a good reserve coach and a good goalkeeper coach, especially with us and the embargo next season.

Valid point.

I did notice the core of the U21 went out on loan when we was doing well.
But let's face it, out of the U21 we will do well to get 2 or 3 first team players. It's the case at every club.

Since Purse took over in the last 2 seasons, they have gone down hill rapidly and none of his current lot would make the Championship.
