‘ Would you keep him, loan him out or try and move him on?

Sun May 14, 2023 12:20 pm

I’m going to talk about a different City player every day:

Cardiff City signed winger Ollie Tanner from Isthmian Premier Division side Lewes and the winger was 20 yrs old at the the time.
It was stated by Steve Morison & the club that Tanner was not for the U21 Squad but for the first team.

After making zero appearances in the Championship last season and being sent on loan for 5 months to non league strugglers York City where two different managers gave him no more than 6 appearances ( incl only 2 starts ), Tanner has now rejoined the Bluebirds and has one year left on him contract.

Steve Morison said: ” Tanner will be given his chance to impress in the Cardiff first team and has been brought in a as first team player.”

Well None of City’s 3 managers or the caretaker gave Tanner one Championship game.

What would you do with Ollie Tanner ( now 21pts old) next season?

Loan I think - get him scoring and bring him back. He impressed in the preseason last year I seem to recall, and I think Spurs had interest right? Must be something there, worth keeping for a bit and seeing :ayatollah:

He is on low wages so keep him and see what ever our new manager can do with him!

I don’t rate him.

Not quick enough or, at the moment, fit enough.

Ok with the ball at his feet but very average in the PW7 game and no real urgency in proving himself .

Personally get shot.

No idea as I have not seen him play. Saying that he has not impressed on loan so perhaps let go.

Give the lad pre-season and unless he is absolutely exceptional, he should be loaned out with view to him finding a lower league club. It's not the lads fault he was sold a ridiculous dream by Morison that he could be a 'project' player and end up playing Championship football. No chance. Morison should have gone with a smaller, quality squad than waist money on total long shots like Tanner. Good luck to him, hope he has a career in the lower leagues.

when he's played for the U23's and the PW game, he was really good, me personally i would loan him out, but do it the way Liverpool did to us when we had Gruijc, i'd put a clause he must be "X" amount of games or the club pays a fee to us, that will ensure he gets game time.

The deeper question (for me) is, are these youngsters developing and improving? We seem to have alot of "not good enough" early 20s, is it Darren Purse responsible for this?

We're going to need some first team players from the U21s over the next few years.

I agree with the FB poster. He looked like there's something there in the Villa game. Loan to somewhere he'll play

Keep …give him a pre season then loan out…sell then if he’s not cutting it.
Low cost and low risk to us .

Too soon to get rid. He's had an unsuccessful loan but doesn't mean he's no good. He's only been with us a year.

Get him out on loan to a team who will play him.

A run of games and I believe he'll do well.

Loan him to a team like Newport and see how he does.

Keep and loan out to a club with a clause to ensure he plays a certain amount of games.

Keep but loan to a decent side to see what he has .

Have to give him a few years considering he was out of the professional game during crucial development years. Look at Vardy etc. He clearly has something about him considering the only thing stopping him from being a Spurs player were some stupid tweets about Harry Kane, despite some on here being adamant that that’s a walesonline lie

Keep him and use him instead of wasting more money on someone who might be worse.
The lad needs a run of games.

Keep him in the under 21 and training with the firsts.
That way he gets best of both worlds and equally you'll know by Jan if he will make the cut.
He showed glimpses in the U21 of looking a half decent player. But equally we've released players who for me turned up week in and out. So who knows.

Move him on, he's looked way off the pace!

Bagan to a nice lad, but can't break in and can't defend.

We need 26 players that can be relied upon!

needs a full pre season.

The lad has basically been an extremely good amateur and hasn't gone through the academy system so hasn't looked after himself like a scholar would. The fitness levels of pro's is ridiculous, I bet its one hell of a shock for the lad.

Loan him until Christmas to a Welsh Premier team so we can monitor him daily, he should piss it, so we can make a judgement from there
