Since the first ever English top flight season of 1888 until this season 2023…

A total of 65 clubs have played in the first division/Premiership/Premier League

Everton is the club with the most campaigns played (120 out of 124).

Arsenal have the record for most consecutive tournaments. (97)

Liverpool City have always had at least one representative each season -Liverpool or Everton-.

Preston North End was the first champion (1888-89), being undefeated that edition and winning the FA Cup double. In addition, they were the first two-champion and currently have the longest drought without winning the tournament (133 years).

The biggest scoring win has been 12-0 and occurred on two occasions: West Bromwich to Darwen in 1892 and Nottingham Forest to Leicester city Leicester City- in 1909.

Huddersfield Town were the first three in a row champions (1924-26).

The draw with the most goals was Leicester City 6-6 Arsenal in 1930.

Aston Villa scored the highest number of goals in a season with 128 goals in the 1930-31 season

Tottenham have the best start of the tournament with 11 wins in 1960.

Manchester United were the first English champions of Europe (a year after Celtic became first European Cup winners from UK)

Liverpool have lifted the European Cup the most times

five English teams have won the continent’s most prestigious competition. (Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea)

Nottingham Forest are the only team in Europe with more European Cups (2) than league titles (1)

Manchester United were the first English side (and second from the UK) to win a treble of League, FA Cup and European Cup

In 1989, London had 8 teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Charlton, Wimbledon, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Millwall) in the top division.

Arsenal scored in 55 straight games between 2001 and 2002.

Stoke City lost 2-0 in the very first round of fixtures in 1888 and after 136 years and 2372 games their goal difference has never recovered and has been in minus ever since - the highest it’s ever been was when it was at 0 after ten minutes of their first ever league game.

Manchester City and Liverpool share two achievements: The most consecutive wins (18) and the most wins in a season (32).

Ryan Giggs is the player with the most leagues won (13),

Alex Ferguson is the most successful manager with 13 titles

Peter Shilton played more games than anyone else (849).

Tottenham Hotspur were the first team from the UK to win a European trophy

William "Dixie" Dean is the all-time top scorer in a single campaign, with 60 in 1927-28. He also owns the feat of the most hat-tricks ever with 37.

Stanley Matthews (Stoke City) is the oldest player at 50 years and 5 days.

Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal) is the youngest 15 years and 181 days

Jimmy Greaves is the all-time top scorer with 357 goals.

Manchester and London are the only English cities to have 2 European Cup finalists (London has three)

Arsenal's Ted Drake scored the most goals in a single game, with 7 against Aston Villa in 1935. (One behind Celtic’s Jimmy McGrory’s all time record of 8 )

Stan Mortensen scored in 15 straight games during his stay at Blackpool in 1950.

Liverpool have won the most points in total and Everton have scored the most goals

All time table

(Fascinating that so many city rivals/near neighbours are within two or three places of each other - Liverpool/Everton, United/City, Newcastle/Sunderland, Wednesday/United, Bolton/Blackburn West Brom/Wolves Chelsea/Tottenham, Ipswich/Norwich, QPR/Fulham)

Great statistics Annis but you missed one out...... Cardiff City are the only team to take the FA Cup out of England when they won it in 1927 ! :D :D :D :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Weren't we also involved in the closest finish to a top flight season ever.

Lost out to Huddersfield. Would have been nice to have taken that one as well as the FA Cup.

And wasn't it on something ridiculous like head to head. First and only time. Goal difference, we'd have won, goals scored we'd have won. Or am I making that up?!

Love a stat Annis. Some great ones there. Thanks

Just checked. It was goals average. Scored dived by conceded.

"In the final match of the season, Cardiff faced Birmingham in the reverse fixture at St Andrew's while Huddersfield hosted Nottingham Forest. A win for Cardiff would guarantee the club its first title regardless of Huddersfield's result while a draw would leave Huddersfield needing to win by three goals to win the title on goal average.[33] Cardiff's match remained goalless for 70 minutes when the side were awarded a penalty after a goal-bound header from Gill was blocked on the line by the hand of Birmingham defender Eli Ashurst. Regular penalty taker Jack Evans had suffered misses in previous months and Gill was reluctant to take responsibility.[39] Top scorer Len Davies instead stepped up to take the penalty, the first senior attempt in his career,[40] but he sent a tame effort at the opposition goalkeeper who saved comfortably. Despite the miss, Cardiff were still on course to win the league title as Huddersfield led Forest by a single goal. However, in the final 20 minutes, Huddersfield scored a further two goals to win the match 3–0 and overtake Cardiff to win the title on goal average by 0.024 of a goal. The result remains the narrowest margin of victory ever recorded in the top tier of English football.[41][42][43] It was also the first time the championship had ever been decided by the method of goal average."

Ouch

1923-24
Champions: Huddersfield Town

Runners-up: Cardiff City

Beaten by: Goal average

This season represents the cruelest of moments for Cardiff City, who equalled Huddersfield's points tally and even scored more goals. Their points difference was the same and both finished on +27 goals, but back then goal average won through, so 0.02 of a goal difference(?) meant Huddersfield pipped it despite only 5 players scoring for them throughout the entire season.

Had the current system been in place, the Bluebirds would have been champions in place of Huddersfield on goals scored (+1)

Thanks Jim,

I love all these stats and it must of been gutting for them at the time to lose out on the old Division 1.

Yes, indeed. I forgot about it being 2 points for a win back then but I meant on goals scored (we were +1 on them)... :ayatollah:
