Sheffield Wednesday legend Carlton Palmer has claimed that Mark McGuinness would "jump at the opportunity" to re-join the Owls after their promotion to the Championship.

Wednesday sealed a dramatic return to the second tier on bank holiday Monday after Josh Windass' extra-time winner over Barnsley saw them win the play-offs.

McGuinness, 22, was a huge part of the Owls' success last term, having enjoyed a stellar half-season loan with the Hillsborough side before being recalled by Mark Hudson in January.

The Republic of Ireland youth international was a mainstay for the Bluebirds upon his return, helping them avoid relegation down to League One.

Now Wednesday have achieved promotion, though, Palmer believes they should go back in for the centre-back – and thinks the price tag wouldn't be an issue. Given he is arguably Cardiff's biggest asset, though, the Bluebirds would likely demand a major fee.

"Mark McGuinness enjoyed a fine spell at Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Cardiff City in League One before being recalled," Palmer told Football League World.

"He then played every game he was available for and helped Cardiff to survive. McGuinness only has a year to run on his contract, he's young at 22 and he can play in a three or a four.

"I think this would be a great acquisition for the Owls and I think he would jump at the opportunity. In the position that Cardiff find themselves in, I don't think the price tag would be too unrealistic."
