BREAKING EROL BULUT: " MONDAY 5TH JUNE 2023 "

Mon Jun 05, 2023 10:39 am

:bluescarf: :bluescarf: " NEW CARDIFF CITY MANAGER MAKES HIS FIRST PRESS CONFERENCE " :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Bulut builds his team around a strong defence, he is very defence minded and concentrates on getting a rock solid defence.

Erol Bulut has been out of work since January so has had plenty of time to relax away from football.

Monday 5th June 2023

Bulut: "We need 8-10 new players in every department"

We need in every department. Offensive department, Cardiff scored only 41 goals. Second bottom scorers. In attacking, we have to invest. Attacking is not only wingers, strikers, No.10. This will start from the back, from the goalkeeper.

Bulut

How long contract?

One year. It shows we have a target and we can continue this work together. One year plus two.

Bulut

Coaching staff?

Yes, two of my old staff will be with me. In the following days I will speak with a few others, we will have to speak in the coming days.

I will be bringing in at least three new staff.

Bulut

Your contract, staff and Tan…?

With Vincent, I had a conversation two weeks ago via Zoom call. Vincent already got promoted two times to the Premier League. Why not a third time? We will make everything possible.

Last year was not so easy to keep in the league, but we don’t want to be in that position again, so we will have to work for that.

Bulut

Difficulties in not being able to pay for players, did not put you off?

I already had it many times in the Turkish league. It will not be easy. But also we have good contacts to European leagues to search for good players to bring them here.

We cannot buy players, but we can loan players and we can loan good players, I hope, and work all together to fix it as early as possible.

At the end of the transfer period there will be more effective players on the transfer market, maybe we can get them.

We have to search and get as many good players as possible. The Championship is a tough league, the teams who are in the league are tough teams, but we will also be tough for them.

Bulut

EROL BULUT:

"I hope together, the team, the coaching staff with the fans, everybody around, will have good victories in this stadium."

“I search a little bit about the club, the name of Cardiff for me is a high quality name , so I decide for that it’s a new challenge for me and what I show a little bit of my successes in Turkey, I show here in the Championship.”

What attracted you to the job?

I wanted to thank Vincent, Mehmet Dalman and Ken to make it possible that I am here. It was not the easy way. But we had discussions 10 days ago when we met, so then we made it possible that we are all together right now here.

I wanted to have a new challenge to be in the Championship to show what I can show in that league, like what I already showed in the Turkish league in the last six years.

We had the chance to go to the Europa League qualification. Cardiff will be a different way.

I am always a manager to have targets, without targets you cannot survive. Also, the players should know the targets we have. For that, we have to work hard every day. Have discipline. Respect each other.

Target for the club this season?

First of all, the training camp and sessions we have to observe what we have and what we need. I have watched two or three games and already we can see what kind of players we have to take for the new season.

EROL BULUT:

What sort of manager are you?

First of all, I don’t like to talk about me. I don’t like that. But one thing I can say about myself, I like discipline for my players, respect each other, not only respect the coach, themselves and the people in the club. That is very important to me.

I’m not a gamble. I like to win. I do not like to lose. I will make everything possible to win and not lose. If we don’t win, we have to get a point. At home, we have to be much stronger, with the fans behind us, everywhere, we need them to support us and we can make some good games. I hope more than this season.

I saw two games, so from there I already thought in my head that I had a system I wanted to play with the team. We have to discuss about that, but already I have in my head the players I want already.

EROL BULUT:

Team has lost half its games last two years - how do you turn losers into winners?

There are some small details about losing and winning. But I think I will have the job with my coaches to put it in the players’ minds not about losing, about winning points and winning games. This will start the first day when we meet here. We will have a lot of meetings individually and within groups.

When I started my first job in management, I decided to be a head coach, they were not in a good position, I said we had to think positively.

This is football - 46 games - from the last to the first one we can change a lot of things.

EROL BULUT:

What style are you looking to play?

My style, my favourite, is 4-2-3-1, sometimes 4-3-3. We can speak a lot about systems. But in the game, all my players should know that when we have the ball they know what to do. It could look like a 4-2-3-1 but it could change.

VINCENT TAN:

“WE’VE NEVER HAD ANYONE LIKE HIM.”

“Erol’s enthusiasm and hunger for success impresses me greatly. When we spoke, it became clear that his intensity and hard work ethic matched the core cultural traits that I want our club to return to.

"His excellent record in European football represents a standard of managerial experience that we have not had at Cardiff City before.

"His experience in this field, I hope, will allow us to attract a higher profile and standard of player in the coming years.”

"His experience in this field, I hope, will allow us to attract a higher profile and standard of player in the coming years.”

Erol Bulut Cardiff City’s new manager:

Bulut has been a manager for six years, but the move to Cardiff will see the former Turkey Under-21s international work outside his homeland for the first time.

He moved to Fenerbahce - where he had spent four years as a player - in the summer of 2020 but departed in March 2021 with his team third in the Turkish top flight.

Bulut was soon back in management with another Super Lig club, Gaziantep, where he was in charge for 18 months before leaving following a disappointing run of results in January 2023.

Re: EROL BULUT:

Mon Jun 05, 2023 11:12 am

Cardiff City Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Erol Bulut as First Team Manager.

Erol Bulut is a personal friend of Cardiff City Chairman Mehmet Dalman

Dalman had a chance last time to chose the manager and he brought in Ollie Solskjaer.

Bulut’s managerial career is still young as he played until he was nearly 40.

Bulut has been a manager for six years, but the move to Cardiff will see the former Turkey Under-21 international work outside his homeland for the first time.

He started his coaching career at Yeni Malatyaspor in 2017 before taking over at fellow Super Lig club Alanyaspor in 2019.
Bulut's Alanyaspor side were beaten finalists in the Turkish Cup in his one season at the helm.

The 48-year-old is largely unknown in the UK, but Cardiff feel it is a hugely ambitious appointment as they look to mirror other Championship and Premier League clubs who have unearthed managerial gems from the continent.

Bulut, of German-Turkish descent, has only been a manager for six years but is understood to be the standout candidate of a number of contenders after the Bluebirds whittled down their hunt to a final shortlist of four.

The Bluebirds hierarchy have been hugely impressed with Bulut's work and he has been their number one choice for some time. He is said to want to hit the ground running and really make strides in his first role in British football, which will be music to the ear of Cardiff fans.

Significantly, it means former boss Steve Morison will not be returning to the club, despite Cardiff owner Vincent Tan initially understood to be open to that idea.

It also means bookies’ favourite Sol Bamba, Sabri Lamouchi’s No.2, will not become manager, although it is hoped the Cardiff legend stays on as a member of Bulut’s backroom team. Bamba’s input will be important as he knows the Cardiff players and can offer guidance on which areas of the team need strengthening in the summer transfer window. He also speaks Turkish.

Bulut obviously represents something of a gamble, but who doesn’t when it comes to the Cardiff job where the profile and scrutiny is arguably as great as that of any club outside of the Premier League.

At least his spell in charge of football giants Fenerbache, seen by many as the Manchester United of Turkey and an incredible hotbed of the game where the pressures are intense, will hold him in good stead for the Cardiff challenge.

Cardiff will be hoping Bulut proves to be their Welsh version of someone like Thomas Frank, largely unknown in the UK and having managed Brondby in Denmark before Brentford tapped into his managerial expertise and marched into the Premier League under his guidance.

Mauricio Pochettino, Ralph Hasenhuttl, Marco Silva and David Wagner are others spotted by Cardiff's rivals who really made their mark in the British game. Cardiff feel Bulut can mirror that.

His name is believed to have been put forward by Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman but owner Tan is encouraged by the ambition and enthusiasm the club’s prospective new manager has shown about the task ahead and has thrown open the finances to fully back the call.

Cardiff have chosen this course, rather than look for the same old names with Championship experience, to try to move in a positive new direction, revive the team’s fortunes and re-enthuse the fan base.

Bulut’s lack of British experience doubtless will be held against him by some, but you need gravitas behind you to be tasked with managing Fenerbache. It is a role which has been held down by two World Cup winning managers, German legend Joachim Low and Brazil’s Carlos Alberto Pareira.

Spain’s Euro 2008 winning manager Luis Aragones also led Fenerbache immediately after that tournament, while Dutch greats Guus Huddink and Dick Advocaat are among others whose footsteps Bulut has followed into. He was bossing Fenerbache just two years ago. It is rare for Cardiff to recruit a manager at the peak of his powers who had so recently been with such a large club.

Bulut’s managerial career is still young as he played until he was nearly 40. His first break was with newly promoted Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor in 2017, taking them to a 10th placed top flight finish in the first season and leading them towards fifth and a Europa League spot in his second year, although he had departed shortly before the end of that campaign after results fell away.

The following season, 2019-20, Bulut took Alanyaspor to their first Turkish Cup Final appearance and again got the team to fifth place in the table and a Europa League position.

Once again Bulut was unable to lead his side into Europe, this time because he had been headhunted by powerhouses Fenerbache.

Bulut helped Fenerbache to challenge for the title for the first time in seven years. In the end they finished in third, two points behind Besiktas and Galatasaray. Bulut departed shortly before the end of the campaign after winning 21 and drawing five of his 34 matches in charge. Fenerbache finished the league campaign strongly without him, but sources say they feel in hindsight they should have stuck with Bulut.

More recently he was manager of Gaziantep. Bulut’s team started well and were top of the table for a spell, but a run of two wins in 16 games, which incorporated six draws and eight defeats, saw him leave his job towards the end of January.

They were still reasonably placed in the league, but tragedy then struck with Gaziantep being in the earthquake area. The club had to withdraw from the league, the Turkish FA awarding 3-0 wins to their opponents in the remaining games which meant they hurtled down the table, but guaranteeing their top flight status for next season.

It seems Bulut left the club amid a major dispute over non-payment of wages which badly affected dressing room morale and Cardiff aren’t perturbed by his lesser record there.

Bulut’s managerial win ratios are as follows:

Yeni Malatyaspor 39 per cent;
Alanyaspor 52 per cent;
Fenerbache 62 per cent;
Gaziantep 32 per cent.

Cardiff have struggled badly since parting company with veteran boss Neil Warnock, but they are hoping this ambitious move pays off and that they finally have a manager who will take them on an upward curve once again.

Other clubs interested in you?

I can tell you honestly, first of all I want to make the decision quick, because I can plan early, because some leagues are still playing. In Germany, I have good contacts over there.

Mehmet said, when we met, what they want and what I want, it was the same. They feel also that I am the right man and I can say from my side that I want the Championship and I want the challenge.

I like the competition here in England. I also follow Championship games and I like the style. I was listening in Turkey where I was manager.

EROL BULUT:

Last job in Turkey, left just before the earthquake…

The earthquake, I was with my family there, before the earthquake I broke up the contract. I don’t want to talk about that. I am a person, if someone says something and doesn’t do it, that is not the way to continue.

It was not an easy time there. It was about the promises. That’s why we broke up the contract. It was a different experience for me.

In Antep, in the centre, not many buildings were destroyed, but we were shaken. It was 4am and we were sleeping. The small villages were totally destroyed. We couldn’t go out. We couldn’t drive to Istanbul because the streets were destroyed.

My house, I felt it shake. My kids still have a thing about that, thinking that it’s shaking. We made a plan to get out of there. Thank god I arranged a private jet in Antep and we left. An ex-team-mate of mine died, one from Fenerbahce, he died. And also an ex-coach who was also with me, he died, too. It was not easy. If I think about this I don’t feel well. It was not easy for my country.

The Turkish view of what to expect from Cardiff City's Erol Bulut, the style of football and what happened at Fenerbahce

We spoke to a Turkish Sports Editor to get the lowdown on Cardiff's largely unknown new manager

Bulut builds his team around a strong defence, he is very defence minded and concentrates on getting a rock solid defence.

Erol Bulut has been out of work since January so has had plenty of time to relax away from football.

The latest new era at Cardiff City is finally here. After weeks of speculation, and the emergence of what felt like a countless list of names, the Bluebirds have opted for former Fenerbahce coach Erol Bulut.

He was always their number one choice.

The 48-year-old, a hugely unknown figure on these shores, never worked away from his homeland, is set to get to work in the capital on Monday, and will already have a meaty to-do list.

But there's a palpable sense of cautious optimism around his appointment.

All Cardiff's previous approach to managerial appointments was to either dip into the merry-go-round of fading Championship-level managers, or leave it in the most secure pair of hands in the building they could find.

In Bulut it feels like they're taking a comparative step into the unknown, but upon scratching the surface a little, one can see the reasons behind it all.

Having been out of work since leaving Gaziantep in January, who were forced to withdraw from the Turkish league midway through the season due to the tragic earthquake that struck the country back in February, this is the chance for a new chapter, and one he will undoubtedly relish.

What of Bulut's playing philosophy?

At Alanyaspor, where he got the side to a Turkish Cup final and a Europa League spot in the league, he built a team that was largely known for his rock solid defensive fundamentals and its eagerness to aggressively press opponents, hitting them in transitions to create chances.

In many ways, it worked. Bulut's teams have frequently been near the top of the list of teams for chances created and shots per game.

Bulut's Alanyaspor side were dominant in the air too. Only Fenerbahce, a club he'd join the following season, enjoyed a higher aerial duel success rate than their impressive rate of 53.9 per cent. It's perhaps for that reason they enjoyed such success from the set-piece, with his team's xG from corners and free kicks the highest of any team in the league that season.

As a result, Alanyaspor weren't really known for intricate possession play. Indeed, going on stats alone, it would be easy to label his approach as the sort of route one, direct football that so many in the capital have become accustomed to.

However, those that have watched his teams, insist his understanding of the game is deeper than many give him credit for. Burak Özdemir, editor at Turkish sports news outlet Fanatik, believes there's a certain level of sophistication to Bulut's tactical approach.

Burak Özdemir:

"He has a tactical understanding according to the opponent," he explains. "I think he's a really good tactician.

"He was very successful in Alanyaspor and he played good football. Yes, he was not successful in Fenerbahçe, but things there are a little different. The most important measure of success in Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş is the championship. Second place is a failure for them.

"So there was great pressure in Fenerbahçe. They haven't been champions for many years."

It should be pointed out, mind, that Fenerbache were having perhaps their best season in seven years under Bulut's watch. He did still mange to finish third, winning 21 and drawing five of his 34 league and cup games in charge.

How Cardiff fans would covet a record like that at the moment!

The Cardiff job is something of a tough gig, but the passion and fervour of fans in Turkey means the pressure at teams like Fenerbahce is well beyond most jobs on these shores.

Patience is certainly not a virtue when you're in the hot-seat there, and that experience will have given Bulut the sort of steely stomach other candidates for the Cardiff job may have lacked.

It would subsequently perhaps be a little unfair to use his time at Fenerbahce as an accurate metric of Bulut's abilities as a manager. When he arrived he did so alongside 16 new players.

Besides, while again showing little interest in dominating possession in the same way as the other top teams in Turkey, there's an argument Bulut didn't get all the tools he felt would be needed to carry on what he started at his previous club.

"When he was at Fenerbahce, former Newcastle United player Emre Belözoğlu was sporting director," Turkish journalist Özdemir explains. "Fenerbahce didn't have a really good squad that season.

"Mesut Özil came in the winter period. But he was really physically exhausted. Bulut requested players from Alanyaspor, but was not taken. Those players went to Trabzonspor - and Trabzonspor became the champions."

Identifying talent is going to be a key part of Bulut's job here in Wales and the contacts made as a player clearly proved beneficial to his time in the dugout.

"He played football in Greece," Özdemir continues. "He knows Greece very well. From there, he brought in low-cost major stars. He probably performs better in low-budget teams."

Whether it's Greece or further afield, Bulut will clearly be able to bring contacts to the table that few of his predecessors, with the possible exception of Sabri Lamouchi, have really even come close to.

For a team that may well need to be creative in the market, it's easy to see the attraction for Cardiff.

But the transfer window will be just one part of what is likely to be a busy summer.

Developing players from within will likely be a key part of the brief too. The likes of Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies simply cannot endure another season of stagnation if they are to become the stars so many are hoping for.

Certainly, Bulut's favoured 4-2-3-1 formation arguably suits the two players, but there are plenty of other holes that will need filling all over the pitch over the coming weeks. Getting the blend right is essential.

Having been handed a chance to shine in a league as competitive as the Championship, Bulut knows he has to deliver. For himself as much as anyone.

After all, chances like this don't always come around too often.

Having been handed a chance to shine in a league as competitive as the Championship, Bulut knows he has to deliver. For himself as much as anyone.

After all, chances like this don't always come around too often.

EROL BULUT:

Lack of managing outside of Turkey, is that a handicap or can it help you?

I don’t think it’s a handicap. I know the system. I played in Greece and Germany, this helps me a lot.

How ambitious are you?

I don’t want to mention now. I want to start and during the season we will see where it is going.

Mehmet Dalman this morning:

CARDIFF CITY CHAIRMAN MEHMET DALMAN:

The Bluebirds chairman said of Erol Bulut this morning...

"We interviewed quite a few people, some really good applicants. Some of the names, it was really impressive that they even considered us.

"He sort of stuck out, really, in terms of his optimism, his vision and pure commitment. In the end, we felt he was the best choice for us. Not the easiest choice. Because I knew everyone would say, 'Who?' Because he has never been heard of here before. So fingers crossed."

On the length of his contract...

"I am not going to tell you that, it's up to him to reveal that. I'm pretty sure he will tell you in the press conference. But it's a good, solid contract, I'm quite happy with it."

Stability...

"I hope so. I certainly don't want to go through another year like last year, that wasn't pleasant. We need stability in the club. I hope he will give us this stability. He is very good at working with young football players and I am hoping he will help with our academy and bring some younger blood through.

"I hope for stability and better performance all around."

Can he sign players?

"Let's look at exactly where we are. Under FIFA rules, if we paid the money to Nantes, which we have, but it was late, then the embargo is lifted. However, under the EFL, once you go into an embargo, you have to stay there for three windows, unless there are circumstances to rectify that.

"We have appealed against that decision, because we have paid the money. The reason we didn't pay the money was because there was a delay from the Central Bank of Malaysia to send money over which was late. We are in discussions with the EFL to help us get rid of this.

"So, technically, we are not under an embargo because we can register players. We cannot, however, pay a fee, whatever we do. So we have to rely on loans and players who are free to join us."

Is that prohibitive?

"You bring players in to improve your team. Of course it would improve the team if you have the ability to buy players. We just have to be more creative.

"This is something we discuss with every manager we interviewed. So they know what they need to do."

Can you get around it buy paying the next instalment?

"NO. Because that is not the rules. Each instalment is treated differently. If we fail to pay the next instalment we will have another embargo."

When could new players arrive?

"Ask the manager. We have been holding back recruitment because we didn't want to bring players in without the manager in first. He has his own ideas and potential targets and a recruitment team which has targets and names for him to consider, so we will get on with that as quickly as possible."

What has Bulut said about last season?

"No idea. I don't think he is going to get drawn into last season. What he has said about the team is that the core team is good. Obviously we have lost three quality players, who go back to their mother clubs, we will be looking to replace them and a few more.

"He feels he can get up and running with the targets he has in mind. We will see."

What happened with Sabri Lamouchi?

"Sabri was an excellent short-term hire for us. He did the job we asked him to do and he did it well."

"I thanked him privately and I thanked him publicly. I am most grateful for that. However, the chemsitry between him and the other Cardiff hierarchy just didn't seem to click."

"I think he did a great job and if we could have kept him then I would have been supportive of that. But the owner wanted to go in a different direction and that was it. We said thank you and we move on."

Trailblazer?

If I am successful here. I hope other Turkish coaches can make the move. I can always believe in myself and proved it in Turkey, I want to show it here.

EROL BULUT:

Is it unfair people are questioning whether you are a risk?

Of course. Fans maye don’t follow the Turkish league. I can say a little bit about the Turkish Super Lig. It’s not an easy league. Many foreign coaches we had in the Turkish league. We have to try and go out of Turkey, to believe in your qualities so we can make this step. I made this step now and I hope I made a good decision.

EROL BULUT:

What’s it like playing/managing Fenerbahce?

Fenerbahce is one of the biggest clubs in Turkey. I won the title with them in 1995/96. I coached them and it’s not easy. Because they didn’t win the title the last eight years - there is a lot of pressure on the players.

The fans want the title.

We made mistakes during my time and also at other times. They have to change something maybe inside the club and change some detail.

Why Erol?

KEN CHOO:

We interviewed several managers. Between Mehmet and me, almost a dozen. He came across as a person who has fire in the eyes. The same characteristics as Vincent, so we knew they would get along. He has that determination and fire in him to succeed.

Bringing a family over to Wales is not an easy position for Erol, but he has decided and we will support him. It’s a no-brainer.

You’ve managed in a very pressurised environment?

Yes, the pressure is high. When I signed there I knew. I feel close to them and I decided to be manager there. So we go there and played some good games. I have the best result in the derbies in the last six years.

Bulut

…There are two points to add. When we spoke to Erol, he went to Fenerbahce. And the second point, about being the first Turkish manager. He is also the first since Franco Farrell to come to Cardiff having managed a big club.
