Sang: Cardiff coach helped in Port Vale move

Tom Sang has joined League 1 Port Vale (18th in League 1 2022-23)>

Tom Sang said he loved working under Dean Whitehead at Cardiff and the coach helped him with his decision to move to Port Vale.

Many feel the versatile Sang, who can play central midfield or at right-back, never quite got enough of a crack at Cardiff, with his toe injury scuppering his progress and Steve Morison, under whom he was cast aside, being appointed manager at the wrong time.

But there are few doubts that Sang will flourish in League One with Port Vale. Indeed, Whitehead, who worked as a coach at Port Vale last year, only had good things to say about the club and its manager Andy Crosby.

"I spoke to him, Deano really helped me with my development, I loved working under him at Cardiff," Sang said after signing. "I spoke to him on the phone before joining and he had only really good things to say and I have a lot of trust in him. And since the meeting, we've seen what he has said was true."

Whether Whitehead sticks around at Cardiff is still up in the air, with it understood that it is likely he will join Valerien Ismael's coaching staff at Watford. A number of players, however, have spoken about his positive impact in the background and Sang's words are also testament to that.
