‘ John Hollins MBE ‘

Thu Jun 15, 2023 8:39 am

Died yesterday morning in London age 76 years.

Ex-Chelsea, QPR and Arsenal in a playing career spanning over 20 years - rattling up almost 800 league games and one England cap, in an era when the Three Lions had world class midfielders like Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles and Colin Bell.

Hollins was a midfield schemer, who turned full-back, and went on to manage Chelsea and Swansea for six years.

A really decent man, who put our deadly rivals on the map with a famous 1-0 FA Cup third round win over EPL West Ham on a monsoon-like night in front of a sellout crowd at the old Vetch Field.

RIP John Hollins x

i only met him once, and he was an absiolute gent, i was about 8 years old and my youth club won a competiton to go have a tour of the vetch and meet the staff and players, i wore my cardiff city full kit around the place, and he made such a fuss, even stopped the tour once he realised i was wearing Cardiff stuff, to have a penalty shoot out against me with an imaginary ball, where he dived around like a loon pretending he saved every goal, and even told me to have a picture doing the ayatollah in all 4 stands, as no one will believe i had the courage to wear cardiff stuff to the vetch. absolute gent
