Shell-shocked Rob Page accepts blame for Wales defeat and says it's 'reality check' they needed on sorry night

The Wales boss says he was as shocked as anyone else by the defeat at home to Armenia on Friday night - the host's first at home in a European qualifying campaign for 12 years

Last nights result for Armenia was one if their greatest ever results in their history.

Rob Page says Friday's embarrassing defeat to Armenia might be 'the slap in the face' Wales need to kickstart their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, but admits the upcoming clash with Turkey is now likely a must-win for his side.

Wales were humbled 4-2 at the hands of the visitors on what was arguably one of the lowest ebbs of Page's reign.

When asked to try and put his finger on what exactly went wrong tonight, Page admitted too many members of his team fell short of previous standards.

ROB PAGE:

"That wasn't us at all by any stretch of the imagination," he said. "We got off the best possible start. We said we needed to get off to a good start and get an early goal, which we did and we created a couple of chances after that, but we weren't clinical.

"When you play the way we play against their formation, you have to be compact as a team and we were far too expansive tonight and got done on four transitions. They were probably the worst goals you're ever going to see.”

For me:

Page got it wrong in the World Cup.

And last night

Wales cannot complain about that result one bit. Armenia got their game plan absolutely spot on and we’re clinical. Wales bad at both ends of the pitch.

Armenia passed their way through a non-existent defence. Page should have spotted that the defence weren't there by half time!!

What a horrible performance. Page needs to go!

This has been on the cards for quite a while.

The signs were there during the World Cup. We failed miserable there but we shook it off as we played the players on loyalty and not who was the best ones. Then when we did play our best team we got thumped. That was against England for those who are trying to work out where I'm going.

We have got of to a good start in this campaign until last night. For me that start was deceiving with a last minute goal against Croatia who should have been 4 up before then followed by a struggled 1-0 win against a poor Latvia. last night we collapsed and really we should not be surprised by it.

Only 2 questions I have is 1, Is page good enough as a manager, 2, Are our players good enough now?

Page not good enough, players are not good enough either. That's not to say Wales can't compete well but when Bale retired, that was the end of the truly world class element that got Wales to tournaments. It may take another 50 years before we see another like him.

Picking favourites again, Moore walked around all game before being sent off. I'd rather Mullin play every time over him.

We underestimated their strike force.

That Ranos has been playing for Bayern Munich 2nd string abs had just signed on a free transfer to Borrusia Moenchengladbach.

These are the type of free transfers available

Hahahahahahahaha the power of social media. Moore may not be great, but Mullin????

That has to be up there with the worst home results in our history. We had a good few shockers to some old eastern block counties in the late 90s and I recall us losing 5-2 to Slovakia at home around 2006 when they were a relatively new country but I’m struggling to remember a worse home result for us ??

Rob Page is a nice guy but his lack of tactical astuteness is plain to see time and time again . Players need to have a look at themselves though.

Gary Speed must be turning in his grave. That was a performance like I haven't seen since before the great man took over.Do the decent thing Robert Page.

This has been coming since Giggs.

Not a manager
Not a game coach

He should have left after the just turn up world cup.
We've potentially gone back 20 years.

You can't sit still in football.
If you do, you get left behind.

Underperforming or bench warming players auto picked. Some shocking performances last night but the set up was all wrong....

Wanted to part ways with Page since Euro2020, not just the World Cup.

It’s not a reaction to a loss, it was just so obvious that he can’t make tactical changes or make specific plans to each game. Same team, same formation, same plan regardless who we face. Also picks players because they got them there or done the job before. Most countries never do this, they pick in-form or performing players.

Agreed, was the Denmark game when he didn't respond to there tweak to formation. His cards were laid down then.
He's not the right man and fell into the job.

Yep, at least he'll chase the ball not stand still waiting for it.

Rob Phillips:

Shocking defeat for Wales which ranks with their worst defeats!! Dreadful defensively, ill-disciplined by Kieffer Moore who was sent off for rash back heel. No argument Armenia were good value for their win - they could have scored more. But this was damaging enough. Ft2-4

He needs to go.

Not a good manager but was saved by Bale multiple times.

Would try and tempt Cooper away from Forest if I worked for FAW.

Has he gone yet?

If not he's deluded.

I have to agree with the majority of posters here, Page was awful at the World Cup and will continue to be awful throughout this campaign. Page will pick players on loyalty as opposed to game requirements and tactics.
If he does not go then Cymru will not progress - in fact I fear we shall slip further back down the rankings and become a joke of a side where we celebrate a draw as if it was a win.

The only certainly that will come out of this qualifying group is that page will not be there at the end, should never had been given the job and the horrendous world cup where he took a host of injured player's for a Beano should of been his last.

We played really well in the first half. As soon as they scored we didnt know how to react and as a result reacted too slow in defence. Giving the ball away is never a good sign. BUT you learn more from setbacks than if we did win so i guess they will just iron out any issues within the team for next time.

Rob Page is a great manager

Rob Page is a great manager

Are you related to Page?

The issue goes back to 2021, we could play well but if plan A doesn’t work, then we have no chance. Also, every team in the world knows our plan A.

It’s not a sign of a “great” manager, for a while we haven’t given other players caps, especially in friendlies where we should be. Didn’t really experiment too much in games where we could have.

Just take England against Malta, they played Trent in midfield since he’s been doing it at Liverpool and it worked wonders. I’m sure we can find ways of making our team better.
