Cardiff City Women turn semi-pro
Cardiff City Women have announced they will be turning semi-professional ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Cardiff City will finance the womans football teams wages and structure.
The team, current Welsh champions, are awaiting news of their Champions League draw, which takes place on Friday.
The update is a real boost for the outfit. Speaking about this new development, Iain Darbyshire, head of women and girls football at Cardiff City, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer semi-professional contracts to our full senior squad.
"This is a huge moment for the women’s game in Wales, and something that we can be massively proud of as a football club.
"We believe that our players deserve to be recognised and rewarded for their hard work and commitment over previous seasons, and this announcement is the first step in doing so. We are now training three times a week, regularly playing in front of crowds over 150 fans every game and seeing significant increases in commercial revenue and it’s only right the commitment from our players to perform at the top level is rewarded and recognised.
"I would like to thank our operational staff, the Cardiff City board, and club directors for their support in delivering these contracts, and a special thank you to Capital Law who have guided us on this process.
"The focus now turns to deciding our final squad for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League, where we will be aiming to represent Wales with pride, and the upcoming exciting 2023/24 Adran Premier campaign."

Firstly I think it’s fantastic we are growing the women’s team and game. England have done a lot to show girls what they can do. All for it.
However. Semi pro. Welsh league. It’s a joke of a league if they actually want to raise the profile of the game. Look at England. The teams we have and do play against have sky deals with a massive profile.
Our women and dare I say swansea. Wrexham.
They need to be in a British or at least English system to have meaningful games and development. Otherwise we are paying for someone half tidy to be snapped up by Bristol rovers women who actually have got a good football pyramid.

This really is great news and should improve both quality and profile of the ladies team in Cardiff...
I seem to recall the last big effort to support them was under Sam's tenure and they had a decent side in the pyramid system?

Could they do some curtain raiser games before the men’s games? Raise the profile more? My daughter is a little young right now but I’d love to bring her to some of games as she gets older.

I totally agree, get the women and other age group games on before the men's team. Finished by 1415 to allow the warmups

Enjoy the ladies football and cricket(tho for some reason of warp, the BBC label it the Ashes), but it’s making for androgynous presentation of sport on tv. Equality yes, androgyny.. F-right off. Sky is worse.

We'll have an hermaphrodites section soon...
As an aside, I see they are seriously contemplating a '
drug enhanced' Olympic competition...!
