MY VIEW: CARDIFF CITY FIELDED THEIR STRONGEST TEAM V WELSH

Sat Jul 01, 2023 3:56 pm

MY VIEW:

CARDIFF CITY FIELDED THEIR STRONGEST TEAM V WELSH LEAGUE CLUB PENYBONT / CITY OUT PLAYED THEM BUT MADE HARD WORK OF IT.

Shall we call this a training session.

Still need strikers big time.

Remember City played against a club who are lower than low in comparison.

Erol will see he needs to still get rid of plenty of the existing players and bring the 10 new players in.

McGuinness and Tanner scored the goals.

CARDIFF CITY 2 v PENYBONT 0
H-T 1-0

Also in the squad this afternoon was : Turner, Ng, X.Benjamin, King, Denham, Campbell, J.Colwill, Adams, Rinomhota, Tanner, R.Colwill, Evans, Watters.

City started with a very Strong lineup against the Welsh League club

That's a strong starting lineup from Bulut.

8th min GOAL FOR CARDIFF!

Mark McGuinness nods home from the corner!

Cardiff 1-0 Penybont.

Very comfortable first-half , like a stroll in the park.

H-T 1-0

Here's how the Bluebirds looked in the second 45:

Cardiff: Turner, Tanner, Denham, Adams, Campbell, King, Evans, R.Colwill, Rinomhota, Watters

A quiet start to this half.
Vontae Campbell and Kieron Evans both looking up for it on this left hand side as Bulut watched on.

Penybont chance
Chance for Venables to level it for Penybont but he fires wide

80th min: GOAL FOR CARDIFF!

Tanner heads home from Kieron Evans' cross to make it 2-0 to the Bluebirds.

It was a training exercise and in the first half there was some fluidity and more forward thinking football. Great to see Robinson back. With the exception of a couple of players, the second half team are no where near it. We have so much mediocrity that we need to get rid of, it's shocking really. Will someone also please put Max Watters out of his misery this season. He is not and never will be a Championship striker, he needs to go. Getting a couple of decent strikers in is again going to be crucial to have any chance this season.

Training match. First half (pretty much closest thing to first team) they didn't have a shot.
We looked dangerous from corners. Robbo very good and found lots of lovely passes. Couple hit a little too fast but again it's pre season and expected.
It was nice to see us play out wide and try and make breaking passes through the middle. Not much long ball.
Positive for me.

We could of played the dog & duck down the road and we get the old fitness that's all it is talk so it don't matter what the result

Of course if matters who we play and how we perform anyone just saying it's a run about is talking nonsense imo these players are suppose to be leaps and bounds above today's level of opponents when it boils down to it and should be smashing them end of. We need 6 or 7 quality players in asap that's the bottom line but that will boils down to money which we don't have to spend so we go with what's there. A relegation fighting squad currently as it stands on paper.

But they are all about fitness, especially the first couple. The manager will try out more tactical things when we go to Portugal.

We've got bigger tests later in pre-season with Fulham and apparently Porto.

We have lost every pre season game before and gone on to have a good season. Likewise we have won every pre season game before and had a bad season.

But yes, pre season games are first and foremost about fitness.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Warnock play Ponty in his first pre season game, how did that season pan out?

Within a month I think the squad will look a lot different than it currently does, so talk of relegation is rather fanciful and overly pessimistic. The manager has had the players for a couple of weeks and I'm sure he already knows those that are not up to the required standard and will need to be shipped out.

Agreed,

I expect this squad to look massively different.

Many current players are just not Championship standard.

My view. I agree a typical pre season training stroll. However, a few observations:

4231 both halves

Kieron Evans was the standout player for me, really tried to take his chance and I think would thrive in a better team.

Ojo did absolutely nothing he has to go.

Tanner scored with a header but... He is not up to this level.

Simpson looked soooooo slow, he has to go.

The gap between sitting 2 midfielders and the 3 was too big, they were really deep.

We just signed Eli King on a new three year deal... The midfielder and he played centre half. He's a big lad maybe that is the plan for him. Not sure if he's played there previously.

The frustrating thing for me is the fringe players except Evans didn't step up and say look at me.

Etete needs more strength and every time he went down it was like it was the end of extra time when he got up so slowly... That was after 5 mins.

These have to go imo:
Watters
Simpson
Tanner
Vontae
Ojo

I agree it was like a training session.

As to OJo please move out.

I will wait on Evans as it was playing against like a club from 7th English league.

Tanner move out .

With you :

These have to go imo:
Watters
Simpson
Tanner
Vontae
Ojo

Crowd 2,906

In all truth there was little to report from the second half, with attacks few and far between but Tanner ensured his side would finish the game with more than goal to their names as he got on the end of Kieron Evans' looping cross to head home and make it 2-0 with 10 minutes to go.
