Do we need a new GK?

Thu Jul 20, 2023 6:20 am

Yes I know that we'd all like one - but do we need one?

Alnwick I think made some good saves yesterday and imo I would put him in as first choice keeper over Allsop.

If there's only going to be 1 or 2 more signings I would look to get CM, RB/CB sorted first before a GK

Not seen enough of Alnwick to judge but he’s got to be better than Allsopp surely.

Yes Alnwick number two, Alsopp league 1 or 2.

Ideally yes. But I don’t think it’s as much of a priority is getting us sorted out field. If we can nail that down we may not need them doing a lot of work!! But if someone becomes available that suits us then yep go for it.

Centre back is the priority for me. If Goutas or McGuiness get injured the backup is no where near good enough.

i would like to see a proper number 1, someone who can marshal the back line and someone you would have confidence in, in goals.

Can't under value the difference a top goal keeper brings, not just in the saves and consistency but the confidence it brings for defenders to concentrate on their jobs

 That's exactly what we need, the Keeper is the most important cog in the defensive unit.

Stopping simple shots from going in would be handy too.

Goalkeeper and CM should be priorities.

yes both are piss poor

I don't think the club see a GK as a priority.

A mediocre goalie can seem unbeatable with a good defence infront of him and I think that is what we will be looking at.

Keeping the ball out of the net is mainly the job of No.'s 1 to 5 (in old money)

GK is vital as it makes all the difference for the confidence of the defense, it's a position equally as important as a goal scoring one, as a good save is as good as scoring plus what the GK brings to the former in helping read the game and organise the game and of course initiating attacks and fast counters etc.

Allsop is just OK and we've had much better, he was only brought in by Morison as he's good with the ball at his feet. I've seen him make worldie saves but also concede when he should have done better. I think we could do better TBH and I quite like what I've seen of Alnwick so I think we are OK(ish) and the real need is other positions.

Leicester have just signed a new keeper which will push Danny Ward back to No 3. He would be a good option to take on loan. (I think he had a raw deal at the end of last season with Leicester) :occasion5:

Much better than our two, if not I think Alnwick is slightly better than Alsopp.

Agree. Goutas needs quality beside him for the first team.

A quality keeper, a quality centre back and a quality holding midfielder needed if we are to challenge in the top ten.
Anything less, I expect mid-table or worse.
I'm simply haven't got the same optimism that a lot of fans have.......just yet!

I agree that those 3 positions are now priority

Focussing on goal conceded, there were 9 clubs that conceded more (including our local rivals down the M4) and 1 other club that matched us. If we had more firepower, we'd have been way higher up the league.

I don't feel as strongly as others that we need a GK but wouldn't lose any sleep if either left and a replacement came in.

What I would like to see more of, is a keeper losing his place if not showing good form.
