Cardiff City U21’s go through to next round of the Cup after struggling to get a result and it ended 2-2 v a Welsh Village side eventually win 3-2 on penalties.
Darren Purses side get a big fright
Cardiff City’s elite U21’s looked second best.
Cardiff City's U21 side travel to face Cambrian & Clydach Vale in Round One of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Friday night - KO at 7:30pm.
City's first competitive match of the 2023/24 season comes amidst the U21 side's pre-season preparations, with Cymru South outfit Cambrian & Clydach set to provide a stern test for the young Bluebirds away from home.
Ahead of the fixture, U21s Manager Darren Purse anticipates a challenge for his side as they set off for Clydach Vale.
"We've been building minutes into our players throughout pre-season so far," began Darren. "Perhaps this fixture has come a little earlier than we'd have liked, but that's how things work out sometimes.
"It's nice to have this fixture in the calendar, because we'll be going up against a side that will want to beat a big city side from down the road!
"It's important that the young players step up to the challenge against this senior side. The expectations will be high for us to perform and get the win, so we need to deal with the pressure, put on a performance and ensure that we get that win. It's going to be a tough test."

Didn't watch it but saw some stats that suggest the better team lost.
Probably says it all about the state of our academy teams and Purse.

I went to the game we were 2nd best first half getting bullied off the ball losing all 50/50sbut somehow leading halftime. 2nd half was improvement but noone really stood out for us.

Cambrian have some decent players.
I know a few, of them they are not pros because not dedicated pros and like going on the piss etc.
But have the ingredients to be much higher level....
Expected this to be tough....

Games like this show how valuable sending youngster out on loan to lower league teams can be. On paper our youngsters should have won comfortably, but the physical nature of men against boys always comes into play.

Our number 2 Will Spiers was a standout in my opinion.
Full back who liked to get forward, good pace on him, confident and made some neat passes and good runs.
Very impressed

For me this just shows the gap we are expecting these youngsters to jump.
The gap between under 21 and Welsh league appears a big jump. The gap between under 21 and championship level football is huge - and we wonder why so many don't make it

Agree with you. Last week I watched the under 21 team comfortably beat Barry Town, a side in the Premier League. The difference being there were much older and experienced players in that side. Colwill ( the younger) and King for example stood out but didn't feature last night. Many of the team playing last night would have been and probably still are in our under 18 team last season.

I watched last night, men v kids you mean the local plumber and pisshead as some one said v a full time professional outfit and the best South Wales can offer and we all saw City plainly struggle v the local post office worker, I was not impressed
