MY VIEW: TONIGHT CITY PLAYED A QUALITY TEAM WAY ABOVE PREVIO

Sat Jul 22, 2023 7:51 pm

MY VIEW: TONIGHT CITY PLAYED A QUALITY TEAM WAY ABOVE PREVIOUS OPPOSITION & DID PLAY VERY WELL BUT GOT HAMMERED AS THE DIFFERENCE WAS AS IN PREVIOUS SEASONS CITY’S FINISHING WAS TOOTHLESS.

The good news is, Bulut has three more players coming in and at lest 4-5 going out.

Tonight’s game was played at a way higher pace than a friendly.

A lot of positives tonight, the team on the whole looks a lot better than last season, football improved and the team looks fitter.

But the big difference was the team with quality strikers came out on top.

The second- half despite Ramsey playing, Porto were in total control and the score could of been a lot more.

Plus there were some usual awful defence errors , but City did play a very very good team.

First-Half: City played really well, but it all meant nothing if you can’t score goals, same old story. We have to score goals that is the truth of the matter and not just against Welsh league teams etc.

Yakou Meite missed out with a tight calf.

Erol Bulut has played 8 friendlies so far:

Won 3 Drawn 2 Lost 3

FC PORTO 4 CARDIFF CITY 0
H-T 2-0

Cardiff City: Allsop; Ng, McGuinness, Goutas, O'Dowda; Ralls, Wintle; Ojo, Robinson, Grant; Ugbo.

Subs: Luthra, Bagan, Simpson, Collins, Romeo, Benjamin, Ramsey, Rinomhota, Evans, Colwill, Tanner, Adams, Etete.

FIRST-HALF:

16th min: GOAL! Porto 1-0 Cardiff City (Martinez 16)
Martinez's first effort is kept out, but the rebound falls kindly to him, and he taps home. (1-0)

Cardiff had played well and had looked the better side at times, but the final ball once again was the problem.

30th min: Ralls went down injured and was replaced by Ebou Adams.

Ojo had a good first-half.

46th min: Martinez again 2nil.

H-T 2-0

SECOND-HALF:

Ramsey replaced Robinson:

In the 47thmin: Outstanding move by Ramsey and Grant which leads to Ramsey hitting the post

49th min, penalty Porto 3 nil. Wintle hand ball.

McGuinness was at fault tonight a couple of times and struggled against higher quality oposition.

Colwill, Simpson, Benjamin, Collins, Etete and Rinomhota on for Ojo, Ugbo, Wintle, O'Dowda, Goutas and McGuinness

78th min 4nil Porto.

NEW MANAGER EROL BULUT:

“I go out to win every game and for me even friendlies are games I want to win.”

Saturday, July 1 vs. Penybont FC (Cardiff City Stadium, 3pm). 2-0

Tuesday, July 4 vs. The New Saints (Cardiff City Stadium, 7:30pm) 3-1

Friday, July 7 vs Cambridge United (3pm) 1-1

Tuesday, July 11 vs Bristol Rovers two lots of 60mins : 1-1 &. 1-0

Fulham v Cardiff City behind closed doors:
2 x 45 min games , City lost both, 1-0 & 3-1.

City lost both games in Portugal:

Braga 1 Cardiff City 0

Porto 4 Cardiff City 0

Very encouraged by the performance, particularly first half.

At least two of the goals were down to big defensive mistakes and one should have been disallowed.

We're lacking goals but I still believe we have players who will get goals.

Hopefully those who thought we would be top four may be a bit more realistic now. Always said mid table would be a good season and we're well positioned to do that.

There's plenty of positives to take forward.

4 nil was not quite the story. Porto did very little in the first half and their goals were aided by some odd referee decisions. Yes we need to work on finishing but I think a little of patience is needed now. We have quality. Tonight we were a bit too eager to shoot early and their keeper was top drawer. Lots of positives in our play and Ramsey sprinkled a little bit of real star dust in some of our moves. We will get better

Porto are no mugs and would turn over most premier league teams , so I think tbh not a bad performance, the difference also there keeper pulled off I would say 2 world class saves from ojo and Evans. Encouraging that we seem to have pace now all over the pitch .

We ain't gonna face quality like that in the championship this season.

A lot being tough on the team tonight.

That was Porto's first team. They won their CL group last year including beating Ath Madrid. Their goalkeeper is worth nearly twice our squad value.

Three strange goals, two nil would've been fair. Their goalie made two top draw saves.

We have been training hard for weeks including this week and Porto play in that temp all the time.

Ramsey was fantastic and will create better chances for us.

Evans continues to impress.

We were as good as them first half imo.

Ugbo is a worry, don't think he's the answer. Ojo did well, I'm not a fan and think he should be moved on but he did well.

Remember, none of our players would even get in Porto's squad.

Martin,

Very true and we played well in the first-half.
But I just hope we can score goals finally this season and cut out the errors in defence.

The good news is, Bulut has three more players coming in and at lest 4-5 going out.

How in the world is Ralls going off injured seen as a positive by anyone? Playing good or bad it's never a positive if someone is injured as far as I'm concerned.

Doesn't matter the opposition defend like that and you'll lose games at any level.

We got promoted under Warnock by having the best defence in the league and our top scorer was Paterson with 10.

Personally I think we have better attacking players now than we did under Warnock, Robinson, Grant and Meite have proved they can score goals in the championship but our defence and GK are not good enough.

Totally agree…can’t believe that any city fan can be pleased when one of ours gets injured ffs …whatever the reason , it ain’t justified…

Strange game where City played some good football and ended being hammered if you just look at the score. As mentioned we will not play against any team of this quality in the Championship.
The positives for me we created many chances especially in the first half and the goalkeeper pulled off two world class saves. First half we the better team overall. 2nd goal should have been ruled out
Other positives was a glimpse of the class Ramsey will bring in the final third of the pitch.
The negatives would be not taking the chances and the panic in defence in tight situations with the ball been given away too much. I am talking about simple passes that went astray.
We do need to strengthen in a few positions in order that we don’t just become an also ran in the lower half of the division.

We proper panicked when our defence was pressed. Other championship sides will take note of that. We have to improve or it will cost us a few goals this season.

Difficult to judge how things are going.
A few matches against inferior opposition and a couple against superior opposition.
Some good possession, but the obvious problem of lacking goals.
I'm still not sure how things will pan out early season although I haven't seen or read about a great deal to be enthusiastic about.
Having said that, I don't suppose you can read too much into pre-season friendlies.
I think we'll have to judge after the first few matches of the new season.

(Disgusting comment on Joe Ralls injury being considered positive though!)

The score definitely does not do us justice.

The 2nd goal would generally have been chalked off via VAR and the penalty was somewhat dubious, had Ramsey scored, this could have been a 2-1 result.

In fairness, they did well against one of Europe's best sides.

I agree,, although there were defensive faults causing those goals the VAR and Pen should be chalked off...
