‘ Punctuated lung ‘

Wed Jul 26, 2023 6:31 am

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin suffered a punctured lung during their 3-1 win over Manchester United, the club has confirmed.

Mullin was administered oxygen on the pitch after a sickening collision with United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop just 10 minutes into the pre-season friendly in San Diego, with the game paused for several minutes.

He made it back to his feet but was still wearing an oxygen mask as he was helped off the pitch by medical staff, before being taken to hospital.

Bishop, meanwhile, was shown a yellow card and was lucky to escape an early sending off, having raced out of his area and clattered into Mullin, who immediately went down in agony.

Following their famous victory, manager Phil Parkinson confirmed the striker had suffered a punctured lung.

The news comes as a huge blow to the club with the start of the League Two season now just days away. Last season saw Mullin score an incredible 38 goals in 46 appearances as the Red Dragons won promotion back to the English Football League after a 15-year wait.

However, even in his absence, Wrexham managed to rally against their Premier League opponents at the Snapdragon Stadium on Tuesday, with a hat-trick of headers from Elliot Lee, Aaron Hayden and Sam Dalby securing them the win after United captain Dan Gore was shown a straight red card early in the second half.
