CARDIFF CITY v COLCHESTER UNITED
Wednesday 9th August, 7.45pm
Carabao Cup First Round
Cardiff City Stadium

Fans can Pay on the Night:

Cardiff City XI: Alnwick; Romeo, Benjamin, Simpson, Collins; Rinomhota, Sawyers; Evans, R. Colwill, Tanner; Etete.

Subs: Luthra, Bagan, Semenyo, Adams, J. Colwill, Ojo, Wigley, Ashford, Ugbo.

A crowd of 5,000-6,000 is expected with The Ninian Stand open.

Bulut intends to give Kieron Evans and Ollie Tanner their last chance to impress v League 2 Colchester.

There will also be a mixture of experience and players that are in the First team squad but have not started yet.

Kion Etete looks the logical choice to start as the No. 9. He showed glimpses of his qualities last season but has just looked a little off-colour in pre-season. This game presents an opportunity for it all to click for him and he can then attempt to provide real competition for new signing Ike Ugbo, who netted on debut at Elland Road, of course.

City are not blessed with out-and-out strikers, so this is pretty much a two-horse race unless the likes of Meite, Robinson or Karlan Grant are asked to play slightly out of position.

Possible Cardiff City XI: Alnwick; Romeo, Goutas, Simpson, Collins; Rinomhota, Sawyers; Robinson, Colwill, Meite; Etete.

Cardiff In defence, the wing-backs almost pick themselves, with Mahlon Romeo and Jamilu Collins both eager to get minutes of their own in the tank. Romeo had a good first season at Cardiff and might consider himself a little unlucky that Perry Ng has moved back out to his rightful position on the flank. Collins started his Bluebirds career like a house on fire before his terrible injury. You can sense there is a little bit of tentativeness in his game at the moment and he needs some confidence injected into his performances. This is the perfect chance to do that. Expect Joel Bagan to get some minutes, too, although his future seems as though it's yet to be decided, with the possibility of a loan away never far from conversation.

Cardiff are drastically light on centre-backs, which could mean one of Mark McGuinness or Dimitrios Goutas are forced into action. Xavier Benjamin deputised at times in pre-season, but in all truth he struggled. Given McGuinness was not 100 percent fit against Leeds, one expects Goutas to fill one of the slots alongside Jack Simpson, who actually enjoyed a decent pre-season and deserves a start.

Midfield is an interesting one. Already Cardiff have Joe Ralls, Ryan Wintle, Ebou Adams, Romaine Sawyers and Andy Rinomhota, with another player expected to brought in, too. That feels a little bloated and imbalanced, meaning they may have to lighten the load before the window is concluded.

Sawyers and Rinomhota feel the right duo to start against Colchester. Sawyers has not played a single minute of football under Bulut, so it may be a stretch, but with his future seemingly up in the air, he should at least be afforded the opportunity to show what he can bring. Similarly with Rinomhota, he has dropped down the pecking order in this new system and with the calibre of players who can now play in that eight/10 hybrid role he will be champing at the bit to show his qualities.

The three behind the striker is an interesting call. One presumes Callum Robinson and Yakou Meite will be handed a run-out, to road test their fitness after suffering niggling injuries in recent weeks, while Rubin Colwill, the travelling reserve at Elland Road, will also be keen to get his first start of the campaign.

All told, that would be a formidable creative engine room if they are given the chance. However, the opposite might be the case in so much as Bulut might not want to risk all of them, with such a long Championship campaign ahead and with all three likely to play a good part in it.

A penny for the thoughts of Kieron Evans and Ollie Tanner, too, who have both done well in pre-season against Welsh League opposition , but were omitted from the squad to face Leeds on Sunday. Their short-term futures for the upcoming season are also yet to be nailed down. The most likely course of action seems to be that they will be loaned out – but is it worth them being put in the shop window to seal better loans than they both had last year, in the National League? Both players are better than that standard, their performances in pre-season showed as much, but of course it's never as simple as that. They can expect to feature at some point, you feel.

Erol Bulut will play a mix of young and experienced players in tomorrow night's game against Colchester United.

Speaking about Colchester, he said:

“For us, some players didn’t play [on Sunday] and were on the bench, so we will use them, but have a mix in our eleven. Of course, we want to win and continue in the Cup.”

“This is their chance again to show me if they can make the first team.”

“Some youngsters, they will be in the squad and some in the first XI. How they played in pre-season matches, I was satisfied with some of them, so we will see them on Wednesday.”

"For our young guys, it’s a chance to show themselves in the game.“

Ryan Allsop is set to miss this one and even Saturday's Championship game against QPR. Callum Robinson could be selected as he looks to build up his fitness following a knock in pre-season.

Erol Bulut has confirmed that he will change the team up from the one which took the pitch at Elland Road.

No, the game isn't being streamed on Cardiff City TV or anywhere and not on TV.

The only games available to watch in the Carabao Cup are Sky's picks, think a couple of others are also shown internationally but this game isn't one of those.

By 9:45pm I am expecting the annual moan about the lack of depth in our squad after another disjointed performance and first round exit. Sorry, can't get excited by that team.

They need to wise up to legal streaming options. Indeed any streaming options.

Lots of us paid for pre season friendlies ffs.

We want to watch our teams play and it isn’t always feasible to be there.

Exactly mate. I'm working in Birmingham this week and currently sat in the hotel bar so can't go to the game and would love to be watching the game whilst having a pint or 4

Etete cutting a frustrated figure up top at the moment. Nothing quite falling for him. He commits a foul on halfway and remonstrates with the referee. Colchester lump bodies forward into the box.
