‘ Still need more ‘

By Glen Williams

While we can afford the team some latitude for playing against one of the strongest squads in the division, Cardiff will have to show more against the top sides moving forward. And they know that.

There were initially some encouraging patterns of play — the move for the first goal was fantastic, for example — but against so-called lesser teams City will have to impose themselves on the game more.

Just how that midfield of Wintle, Ramsey and someone else, should Ralls' injury prove serious, works will be crucial moving forward. It's been a problem area for Cardiff for some time now and they didn't really do enough at Leeds, particularly after Ralls' departure.

In Ramsey, who did show moments of elegance and class, they have a quality player at the apex of the midfield, with quality wingers out wide. Cardiff's midfield will have far more influence this season, you feel, and it will go a long way to deciding how many goals they score.

Conversely, in defence, they have to be far more robust in that area of the park. So many times Cardiff were carved open down the middle and had to commit fouls or allow Leeds' forwards to let-off shots from 20 yards. Their attackers should not be finding space in there.

Cardiff's midfield is ample for the Championship, but if they are to aim higher, they need a top-end Championship or Premier League-quality midfielder in there. You saw just how good Ethan Ampadu, a £7million signing, was against the Bluebirds. Someone like a Tommy Doyle in there would be just the ticket. Control that midfield, both in defence and attack, and it will allow City's exciting attacking players to flourish.

Its a worry with injury prone midfielders ralls and ramsey we definetly need a terrier type but also a playmaker if the two above are out
