Still cannot defend

Mon Aug 28, 2023 1:07 pm

Another goal where we were poor. The Cardiff city player leaves Bannan. No need for the Cardiff city player to go towards the ball.

Think that's harsh. It was a great goal by Bannan and we'd been defending non-stop for the ten minutes previous to that. Again, we defended well apart from that one moment where he wasn't closed down.

It's easy to look at an isolated incident and criticise it without the context. It wasn't like the goal at Leicester where it was a big mistake.

I just see Cardiff players looking at the ball and not being aware of where the players are. The first goal by QPR was the same when the striker went between the 2 centre half’s and they both looked at the ball without looking at the goal scorer. The ball never goes in the net on its own, some one needs to put the ball in the net. Bannan is a quality ball striker and by leaving him unmarked just outside the penalty area- it was odds on he would score.

game really changed when they brought fletcher on, big strong target man, started to bully Goutas, who did his best to defend against him, but found it difficult. Bannans goal was a bit of quality, the team charged out to close the ball down, but he just curled it top corner, but towards the end of the game, they should of scored 3 or 4, even Windass went through one point around 70mins i think it was, free header in the box, brilliant save by Alnwick, but Collins looks terrified of the ball on Saturday. no confidence in anything he did.

Even though Siopis is class. That's his player. Needs to be edge of the box to clean up etc. Defensively they all flooded the box and done the right thing.
Early doors and the signs are promising for me.

Do think we need to sharpen up a little more defensively and improve game management here.

If they find themselves under the cosh at 1-0 up (as per against Wednesday) as we were for a good 10 -15 minutes, then rather than continue to add risk by playing out from the back, just switch it and go long until the opposition run out of steam/ ideas (whichever comes first).

Can’t really fault the defending for Bannan goal.
He’s just scored a pearler from 25 yards.
Sometimes you just got to say oh well, fair play

So sensible, so obvious, why can't Bulut and his team see this?

Also when a team is having a lot of success from a high press, why play to our opponent's advantage, Man City can continue and still play the ball out under pressure, but we can't.

Bluebina

It does my head in TBH. We used the same tactics last season.

It is blindingly obvious that if you keep the bloody ball far away from your goal as often as possible your opponent is less likely to score. With our sitting back an insistence on playing out from the back, it invited unnecessary pressure and Wednesday had the chances to win that match.

As you said, we ain't Man City, so go long when you're under it with the opposition chasing an equaliser or winner. There's no shame in that. By all means play like Barcelona when you're in the middle or upper third of the pitch!
