Done Deal: " Jonathan Panzo "

UPDATED:

The central defender joins on loan for the 2023/24 season

Cardiff City have completed the loan signing of Jonathan Panzo from Nottingham Forest and the defender has revealed why he chose the Bluebirds amid interest from rivals Swansea City.

Cardiff had been keen to bolster their centre-back further all summer, with Panzo having been a target for some time now. The termination of Jack Simpson's contract on Thursday night also escalated things.

And the Bluebirds had to fight tooth and nail to get the 22-year-old centre-back through the door, with South Wales derby rivals Swansea having shown strong interest in signing the player, too.

Cardiff City and Swansea City in battle for Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo

The Bluebirds and Swans are each keen on Panzo

By Paul Abbandonato

Welsh rivals Cardiff City and Swansea City are battling it out for highly-rated Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo, Wales Online can reveal.

The Bluebirds have held advanced talks with the 22-year-old centre-half and hope to get a loan deal over the line before the closure of the summer transfer window.

But Swansea have also expressed an interest in landing the England Under-21 ace. The Swans have the advantage of being able to pay a transfer fee, which is something Cardiff can't do because the the EFL embargo they have been placed under this summer.

However, Panzo himself is understood to be veering towards a move to Cardiff and has been hugely impressed by the vision shown by Bluebirds boss Erol Bulut.

It remains to be seen how the situation plays out over the course of the next 24 hours, with the window closing at 11pm on Friday.

Cardiff and Swansea each need to bolster their centre-half options.

The Bluebirds have parted company with Jack Simpson, who was signed by Steve Morison but clearly does not fit into Bulut's plans. He was badly at fault with Leicester's winning goal versus the Bluebirds recently.

If they miss out on Panzo because of the fee issue, Cardiff have two other options up their sleeve. They are understood to want a quick decision because Bulut needs another defensive body in the building before the window closes.

Swansea will also need to bolster their centre-back options if Nathan Wood leaves to join Southampton. The Swans' former boss Russell Martin, who is in charge at the south coast club, has made two offers for Wood, but Swansea feel their valuation for the player has yet to be met.

Cardiff are also waiting to see what happens with Kieffer Moore on the last day of the window, the Bluebirds ready to try to bring the Wales striker back to the Welsh capital.

They are entitled to bring in as many loan players as they want, but only five can be named in a match-day squad.

If Panzo and Moore do join, they will be two of those players, with goalkeeper Runar Runarsson a third. It would leave Josh Bowler, Karlan Grant and Ike Ugbo having to fight it out for the other two spots, but as injuries and suspensions bite the situation may take care of itself anyway.

Panzo spent a highly successful year on loan at Coventry last season.

Panzo has a large sell on clause so a loan may be preference of Forrest if interested parties won't cough up the asking price. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Jonathan Panzo been on Cardiff’s radar for months. Swansea, West Brom, Coventry all explored deals. Still up in air but don’t rule out a full time move from N Forest. Hefty sell on clause been discussed as a potential option as well as loan

Not to be negative but I can't see this one happening at all. Neither Moore being the case too. I hope we sign somebody today and I hope to be proved wrong if it is these two however.

Cardiff City beat Swansea City to loan signing of Nottingham Forest star Jonathan Panzo
The Bluebirds are set to make the defender their ninth signing of the summer window

Cardiff City have beaten arch rivals Swansea City to the loan signing of Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo, WalesOnline understands.

The Bluebirds held talks with the 22-year-old centre-half and Erol Bulut was keen to get the signing over the line before Friday's 11pm deadline. You can follow our transfer news live blog here

Panzo is understood to have met the manager at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday evening and the Bluebirds struck a deal with Forest, whose owner Evangelos Marinakis has close ties with Bulut owing to their Olympiacos links.

It is some feat that Cardiff have managed to pull of such a transfer, with Swansea understood to be willing to pay a fee to sign the former England under-21s international. Cardiff are unable to do so owing to the terms of their transfer embargo, which stipulate that they cannot pay a fee for players.

We are told that Panzo really bought into the project Bulut is building at Cardiff and that ultimately sealed the deal. Given Jack Simpson was last night released from his contract, Panzo's pathway into the first team is also a clear pull.

Panzo spent a highly successful year on loan at Coventry last season, helping to steer them to the play-off final, which was ultimately won by Luton Town.

But the defender was a key part of the Sky Blues' campaign, playing 29 games for the Midlands club. Panzo is also left footed, which is a highly sought-after trait when signing centre-back.

It is hoped that Panzo will be available for Cardiff's game against Ipswich Town on Saturday. An announcement is expected imminently.

If that is true then all we will need is land Moore and we would have just about the most perfect of Summer transfer windows EVER, and not even spending and transfer money, however its likely that we have had to pay a higher percentage of wages for loans.

One thing is for sure there will be no relegation battle this season, and just maybe we can turn the table upside down from last year! :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

It is great that we have a manager that can really sell his plan to prospective signings.

We really have to get behind him and give him some slack to allow him to blend all these new great signings to become the force he wants them to be. We also should appreciate all the work that has gone on behind the scenes by those at the top and backed him 100%

What a difference this transfer window has been this year, long may it continue. :occasion5:
