‘ Romaine Sawyers ‘

Mon Sep 04, 2023 3:00 pm

Cardiff man Romaine Sawyers is reportedly attracting interest from Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Sawyers is surplus to requirements in the Welsh capital, with manager Erol Bulut happy to let the midfielder go. A deadline-day move to Rotherham United failed to materialise but he could still yet depart, with transfer windows still open in different parts of the world. Israel's transfer window remains open until September 20.

"I had a conversation with him and I was clear with him and I will not hide it here, he was in the national team, came back and had one game. We now have many players in midfield so I told him for his good he should go try to find a club," Bulut said of Sawyers last month.

"If he does not get minutes here at the age of 31 it would be best if he takes a look at another club to leave, to play at least another four or five years as he is planning to play to at least 35/36. He has spoken to his agent, I think he is trying. He will find something because he is a good player, he is a very good player."

Hes a frustrating player. A lot of talent and on his day can be unplayable, but his day comes far too infrequently.

He needs to go if he has an offer, not going to play for us.

Unlike others such as Campbell, I do believe that Sawyers does actually want to be somewhere he will play games.

I totally agree. He's shown in his time at city that he's a top player at championship level on his day but he's not consistent enough for Bulut to rely on him.

How were we able to release Simpson so easily but can’t get rid of Sawyers and particularly Campbell who were both told they’re not wanted?

They have to agree a settlement and guess is financially they won't.

I’m guessing they are different levels of not wanted.

Simpson was a liability at the back.

Sawyers is not as good as the others ahead of him.

Campbell clearly has dirt on someone.

We obviously cannot just release a player without their permission unless there is a suggesting of illegal behaviour and even then they could fight it in court.

The way to easily get rid is to fully pay up their contract, giving them all their salary due for the rest of their contract. This very rarely occurs so a monetary deal is struck a bit like when Ramsey left Nice.

There are then two types of players. Those that react to being told they will not play and want to. So they take the offer and look for another club. Kudos to Simpson for this.

Then there are the others that just say fine. I will sit on my arse and take your cash. Which is what these players MAY be doing. There is nothing the club can do.

Future thinking would hope that a major part of a players weekly salary is based on appearances then there is motivation to train hard, learn more and get picked.
