“I WAS HUNG OUT TO DRY SAY EX CARDIFF CITY MANAGER”

Fri Sep 08, 2023 11:21 am

Former Cardiff City manager Steve Morison claims he was 'hung out to dry' after holding talks over a possible return this summer.

Morison has dropped down six divisions to keep himself in football management.

Morison was dismissed 10 games into last season, having overseen a huge summer overhaul after guiding the Bluebirds to 18th in the previous campaign with Derby minus 21pts and Reading again minus 6pts.

Mark Hudson, and then Sabri Lamouchi, took Morison's place in the dugout during a chaotic campaign, with the latter again steering City away from the dropzone.

Incredibly, Morison was one of the names to be not only considered by the hierarchy but was actually being offered to him, before the club eventually opted for Erol Bulut.

It was a move that predictably sparked a big reaction among fans and the media, which Morison claims helped convince Cardiff to go in another direction.

STEVE MORISON:

"It was totally random. I was having a bath and my phone went off, I was like, 'What's that all about?'" Morison told Sky Sports. "I was asked to go to London for a conversation about having my job back.

"I went and had the meeting, met the owner (Vincent Tan) for the first time. It was kind of surreal and I left that meeting thinking there was every chance I might have that job back. I didn't 100 per cent believe it would happen, but I had the meeting because it would have been stupid not to.

"Next thing I knew it was in the press everywhere. I was hung out to dry a little bit to see the reaction and it wasn't strong enough in my favour, and they went a different way."

Morison would later go on to take the post at Isthmian League Premier side AFC Hornchurch, a move that came on the back of a conversation with chairman and Millwall fan Alex Sharp.

It's a direction he admits could prove to be something of a gamble.

"You have to put your ego to one side," he added. "I just wanted to work rather than wait for another opportunity to open up. And it's a really good opportunity. There are good people there and it just felt right."

"Of course, it's a risk. If we don't do well then obviously that's a reflection on myself. Arguably, I look back and maybe I shouldn't have taken the Cardiff job or should I have got out when I kept them up? Maybe my stock was high then. But you back yourself like you did as a player."

"The plan is promotion with Hornchurch ," he said. "They missed out by four points last season, can we bridge the gap? We'll just keep grinding away, we've got a good squad of players which allows us to mix things up. It's a solid start. I wouldn't say it was amazing.

"For me, it's about how can I help. I'm still able to move, play football, and partake in a training session if I need to or with someone specifically. Is there some advice I can give? That's no different to any level of football

Sometimes as far as the club are concerned you just have to wonder what on earth goes through the heads of the clowns running the club.

Who could possibly have thought that for any footballing reasons it would have been a good idea to have Morison back as manager?

Even Morison seems like he can't believe they were thinking about offering him his job back!

When you think that a football club is a multi million pound business it just makes you shake your head in disbelief at some of the thinking of those in charge.

Annis,

The more things like this that appear only serves to confirm that they have learnt virtually nothing during the time they've been in charge of running the club.

Correct David,

For years and years I warmed what was happening at our club, was ignored by many fans and many just did their dual sarcasm and sniped.

I don't believe for one minute that morison was offered the job. I am led to believe that tan sounded morison out, and as soon as Dalman got wind of it he got involved and stopped any futher talks. Thankfully, from that moment on Dalman took over with the new manager search and we end up with Bulut.

We need to draw the line at blaming the board / owner for something they didn't even do.

Paul,

I know 1,000% Morison was getting the job again from Tan and Dalman told Tan NO as I am
Out and No more money from me.

Yes Annis, that's more or less what i heard and that is why i believe Dalman is going to make a move for the club when conditions are right.

So you're saying that Morison is lying?

I agree; but if talk of City still paying Morison part of his contract in compensation is right, then it woukdn't be so surprising to see VT think with his wallet half-closed rather than half-open...

I was against bringing Steve Morison back and I feel that the eventual move for Erol Bulut was a far better decision and he will move us forward...

I have heard Steve Morison talk about his City days on a number of occasions now and each time I have been left thinking "Is there any blame you can attach to yourself for your fall from grace at the CCS?"

The simple fact was, no matter what the supposed 'interference' from VT, he lost it and was summarily dismissed, as would happen in the same circumstances at any club, not just ours

I think it's taken Tan years to get over spunking £40 million on Acorn. That stung him big time as he probably feels he was hoodwinked into paying some inflated transfer fees.

Of that, I have no doubt; which is why I am not as supportive as others of certain past managers... :ayatollah:

You can add Murphy to that as well.
