Pre match chat and info for Sunderland away

Thu Sep 21, 2023 8:19 pm

As the name suggests, I have popped on here for friendly debate not to get involved in any arguments. I also enjoy chatting or meeting opposition fans to get a good idea of how they think their team is playing and if they are visiting Sunderland to answer any questions about parking, pubs and so on.

I know you have a new manager and will be feelers my confident after beat Swansea at home for the first time in over ten years.

Arron Ramsey has returned to his roots, how has he settled and which players should Sunderland look out for?

I understand that you are playing more of a pressing game than last, how is that working out?

As far as Sunderland are concerned after losing the first two games we have won four and drawn one with eight different players, none of them forwards getting on the scoresheet.

Mowbray has us playing a fast passing game with several players willing to run at the defence.

The team is the youngest in the Championship and full of confidence. However we may still be missing Ekwah who has been outstanding so far this season.

If you want to listen to a pre game podcast there are several bit a good starting point is the What the Falk podcast which has just posted a preview with a Cardiff fan giving their thoughts on the game.

Welcome to the forum :thumbright:

Thanks for posting the info on how your team play, interesting to know.

Good start for you so I would be very happy if we could get a point.

Personally I'm going to miss this game due to a prior commitment unfortunately, but hopefully an entertaining match for all going :bluebird:

Welcome to the forum and with the form your in I expect a really tough game against you on Sunday

As for us under our new manager we are a much, much better team than last season. If it wasn’t for the fact we have conceded several late, late goals in our games this season we could and should probably have 3 or 4 more points than we actually have

Yes your right we do press high up the pitch and break very quickly with a lot of pace in attack

Ramsey was rested in midweek but will play on Sunday and if you give him time and space will control the game

Overall there is a buzz about the place not seen for several years. I expect a tough, tough game but I will be disappointed if we don’t get a draw and and am reasonably confident we will get all 3 points

Good luck for your season but not for Sunday

So how are we feeling as Sunderland fans?

Well, the first game I attended was 1968 and I have to say the football over the last 12 months has been the most enjoyable in all of that time. We are not at the level we’re we’re 30 odd years ago when we finished 7th in the Premier League, two years in a row, but the potential to get to the top flight is there,

Under the current owners we have a very clear plan. Search out the best young talent across Europe and sign them up for small fees with low wages. Develop them give them opportunities in the first team and increase their value before they are sold for a profit. That profit is then recycled into buying the next batch of even more talented kids and so on.

The type of players we are signing appear to fit a model, fast skilful players with a very high potential ceiling. Gone are the days of buying ex top flight players for large fees paying over the offs in terms of salary and getting zero commitment from them as we were their last paycheque.

The other part of the model is that we are picking up young players who have seen their potential not realised after being seen as “the next big thing” and giving them a second chance. Clarke being a prime example.

It seems to be working so far and this summer we have brought in about 11 players and if you exclude Dack, they are all under 21, sold an injured soon to be out of contact forward to Southampton and made a profit in the window

So we are very happy as fans.

I have little doubt you are a Sunderland supporter, so welcome; and some good points made. I used to have dealings with a company in your area (DC ;) ) and know your supporters to be both amiable and loyal to your club...

But David Marshall? Really...?

Hello, I think it'll be a competitive match. But so far We tend to sit back on a lead and invite pressure leading to conceding late goals. That in mind I predict a draw.

Making a weekend of it by watching Middlesbrough v Soton, Saturday; spending Sunday morning with my sister who lives in South shields then going to watch the game at the SOL in the afternoon.

Weve booked a place to stay overnight in Roker. Is the area within walking distance of the SOL?

Yes Roker is in easy walking distance of the SOL.

When Sky force stupid lunch time kick offs on us fans I often park down there and have breakfast on the seafront before walking to the match. If you don’t have breakfast included in your package I would recommend either the Tin of Sardines, where you can have brunch on the outdoor balcony over looking Roker beach and the piers, or if you want a superb breakfast sandwich to walk along the prom try a place called Cole on a side street just behind the Roker Hotel.

While I am talking about the beech, it turns out it wasn’t the water quality which caused the swimmers to get sick but the food prep which caused an out break of norm virus in the elite competitions only. The food was provided by the event own catering team who travel with them, so not local staff either.

If you fancy a drink before the match there are several decent pubs down that way as well. If you like good craft beer you can always try the Vaux taproom, which is much closer to the ground just behind the McDonald’s in the Tesco car park. Vaux is a new venture which bought out the name of the old local brewery after it closed and is now making some outstanding new beers, but beware if you are driving some of them are 6.5% in strength.

For anybody coming on the Metro this is also just along from the Stadium Of Light metro station.

I think as long as Ramsey and Siopis stay fit we have the best two centre mids in the division excluding Leicester.
Our full backs work hard and our cbs are big and strong. As for the forwards , as some else pointed out , it’s all about pace.
They also said that there was a buzz, which I feel personally for the first time in many years.
Things are looking up for City and you should expect us to turn up looking for a win.

Our keeper is starting to look very decent also.

Having said all that, I’d be happy with a point

As the link to our match preview didn’t I work I have cut and paste it here. Some of the graphics have not transferred but you get the idea.

Sunderland welcome Cardiff City to the Stadium of Light in the Championship.
Last time out Sunderland beat Blackburn and Cardiff beat Coventry.
Sunderland won their third game in a row after a battling performance against a really tough Blackburn team to move up to 4th place.

Erol Bulot says Aaron Ramsey will be fit enough for consideration for Sunday's trip to Sunderland. The Wales captain missed the 3-2 win over Coventry City in midweek, although the boss said in the aftermath he was just being rested. He will now be available for the game at the Stadium of Light, with Bulut confirming his only absentees will be Callum O'Dowda and Josh Bowler.
Tony Mowbray:
"I do sit and worry sometimes that if Ballard gets injured, with total respect to the young centre-halves we have behind him, they're not Dan Ballard. But I believe Luke O'Nien's voice and organisational skills are just as important as what Ballard brings.
"His composure to pick the first pass on the transition is really exceptional and he's a really talented footballer as well."
"But, listen, I think the team is better than last season. I know we had Amad last season who is an amazing individual footballer who could damage teams. But I feel the position play of the team is better this year."
Erol Bulot:
"He (Ramsey) will be ready for Sunday, I spoke with him, he feels good. Today he was on the field, he made some runs. Physically he is in very good shape and mentally he is in very good shape. We need him."
"When we speak about the last game, I have no new injuries. So I am glad. But we have some previous ones, like O’Dowda, today he started running on the field. Josh Bowler still has an injury."
“Like all games! They had a great win against Blackburn and they played good. They are a young team and they work hard. They stay tight and close in defence, but all teams have issues, so we will analyse that.”

My two pence:
Three wins on the bounce and going for a fourth, hopefully there are no new injuries to report. A great result at Blackburn despite the first twenty minutes where we could easily have conceded 2 or 3. Cardiff gave us a good game last season winning 1-0 and are in similar form to us, winning 4 from the last 5 games.
I’m going for a 3-1 home win.

The way both teams are playing it's going to come down to who scores the most on the day.

I remember last season we lost to Sunderland at home 1-0 but that scoreline flattered us we barely got a kick all afternoon.

We're a different team now though, we score and create plenty of chances just stupid defensive mistakes have undone us especially away from home.

Would be happy with a point up there so I'll go for a 2-2 draw and an entertaining game of football.

Most of my extended family are from Durham (most in the Pity Me area) and own businesses up there. One of them was a manager with Hillarys in Washington and I had some dealings. I'm up next for the Remembrance Parade at Durham Cathedral in November, the next best to London IMHO... :ayatollah:
