OLLIE TANNER: “ EROL BULUT “

Mon Oct 02, 2023 3:03 pm

OLLIE TANNER:

He told The Mirror: "[Bulut] has been really good to me. I had to come in and work hard in pre-season, but I think he took to me and I took to him. I can't thank him enough for the opportunities he's given me. With the season I had last year it would have been very easy for him to just send me out on loan again, but he's given me the chance to express myself and play. He's allowed me to be free; he's almost unlocked me in a way."

However, Tanner has not forgotten the people who helped him along the way, in particular Lewes FC manager Tony Russell, who took him in after he was let go by both Arsenal and then Bromley. "When you get let go by a club your confidence goes," he added. "You've got to be mentally strong in football and you've got to bounce back.

"It's always been football for me [though]: I've never looked at or even thought of anything else. It almost had to work, I was that focused on it. I was fortunate to find my feet at a really good club in Lewes.

"I got on really well with Tony Russell; he understood me as a person and a footballer and knew what I needed. We were always on the phone speaking. It was a match made in heaven and he helped me massively.

"It sounds mad, but he unlocked my game and took me to another level. I found myself as a player under him. Without them [Tony and his staff] I wouldn't be where I am now, so I owe a lot to them."

Some managers just don’t let players express themselves and we had a number of them over the years who have stifled talent.
I have the feeling Bulut is not one of these but he still requires hard work.

I'd completely written him off.

He is one of a few players that looked nowhere near good enough for the Championship (Etete is another), but Bulut has done good work with and got playing well.

Totally agree. Imo he’s also not afraid to make decisions on who aren’t good enough (some possibly at the moment) such as mark Harris, Isaac Davies and Eli king).

Makes you realise that even the most talented players in the country have to be coached properly for them to realise their potential and prosper in the game. How many of them I wonder have drifted out of football because they never received the right coaching and development that is now so evident in Tanner's emergence. It appears that Bulut is rather special and we are very lucky to have him.

I do wonder whether Lennon Peake had been given more time with Bulut, rather than the juniors, whether he would have become a star as well.

Bulut does have that magic touch and, in my opinion, the management of our under 21s should be someone from Buluts past who thinks the same way as he does.

Monty, providing he’s ‘on board’ and gives it a go with EB I’m sure he’ll be fine.

Paul,

Purse shifted Purse out it was beyond, offering him Pontypridd United for a season

He played on the weekend for Steve Morison , hopefully gets fully fit and proves arsehole Purse wrong.

Mark Hudson rated him highly

I'm not sure Robinson needs sorting out!

What has he done wrong since being at the club?

Bulut just needs to give him license to do what he's best at - stringing play together I'm final third, creating and taking chances.

We're not talking about Tanner here - Robinson is an experienced professional and proven at this level.

Just give him more opportunities Bulut now that Rambo is sadly injured.

What he's done wrong is he doesn't do the defensive side of the game well.

It's clear that Bulut won't start him until that changes, and I agree.

Tanner's defensive play has improved which is partly why he is getting more minutes.

You mention Ramsey, and when he was playing he was often at the edge of our own box defending which is what's required - you don't see that from Robinson.

If you look at players who have started regularly in the wide positions and number ten this season, yes they attack well but crucially they help out defensively. This applies to Bowler, Meite, Grant (most of the time), Ugbo (when played on the right), O'Dowda etc.

The days of the defending being left to holding midfielders and the back four are over. Every strong team these days will have every player doing the defensive work, with the exception maybe of the front man.

Robinson needs to work on how he does defensively before he has a chance of starting, the same goes for Colwill.

100% agree with all of that except I think that Grant is now doing the defensive bit a bit more than most of the time if that makes sense.
