" Poor decisions tonight "

Tue Oct 03, 2023 8:37 pm

Our winning league run ends tonight, as Middlesbrough deservedly win 2-0.

Yes we had a number of players missing due to injury, but I think poor decisions were a big factor in this result.

I have no idea what the logic was in playing Adams at right back. He really struggled, as you'd expect. A very strange decision when he had Romeo available.

It was also strange when Tanner was substituted. He was our best attacking player at the time, with Grant and Etete struggling.

You could say it was one game too far, but I really didn't understand these decisions.

Bulut has done a lot right recently but he definitely got it wrong tonight.

On to Watford at home on Saturday, when hopefully we can continue our good home form. But we will need a better selection than tonight.

Agree with you 100 percent. Not buluts best performance for sure, think he got it really wrong tonight.
Hope he learns from it.
On to Saturday :bluebird:

To be fair to Bulut, he didn’t have it easy. A lot of injuries hitting us at the minute, and we didn’t have a big squad as it is!

In regards to playing Ebou, we only look at things from the outside. You don’t know what happens, or is said behind the scenes. Maybe he thought Ebou deserved a chance somewhere in the team, and thought he was capable of doing the job.
Also, I think people still forget about Tanner. In terms of his overall exposure at this level, he’s still learning a lot. Erol is just treating him like a youngster and protecting him.
I’m not gonna slate Bulut because he’s the best thing to happen to this club in the recent past.

Watford at home on Saturday, hopefully if we can get 3 points there we then have the international break to allow players to come back injury free, and then pick up where we left off!

Agree about Adams but think some of the decision making in the pitch wasn’t brilliant…Grant should have put Tanner in and it’s a different game..

Ng needs to be kept at RB, we’ve got cover at LB, if Buluts not happy with who he has at LB he needs to explore free signings or buy in January.

Couple of chances for us had gone in before Boro’s opener it’s a different game, if only the crossbar was a few inches higher lol

One thing for certain, based on the last few matches, is Grant can’t cross the ball.

I think Ramsey looking likely to be out for a good while may have also effected the teams feel good factor and spirit
he had made such a difference since been in the team
granted we have done ok while he has been out
but long term him missing is weakening our creative play in midfield and that extra touch of class and drive
and feel good throughout the team may dip.

Adam's was a very odd decision but hooking Tanner was not so daft. With a stretched squad he maybe wanted to protect him for the weekend. A lack of creativity killed us tonight. Put Ramsey in that team and it would be very different. Need to get to the international break now and avoid defeat at the weekend. It would be a real shame if we lose again as September was the best month at City for a good couple of years

Was strange not playing Romeo, but then again he’s been awful so far this season.

All the problems coming down Tanner and Adams’ side. I though Tanner was at fault for their first goal. Lost his man and was really weak in the challenge which let their player nip in and run into the box. Not surprised he was subbed but that also meant we had lost any threat.

We had two good chances with Grant and Tanner. If they go in it’s a different game. Was easy win in the end for Boro.

Once they scored we collapsed. Lucky it wasn’t more of a battering. If it wasn’t for Goutas, who was excellent again, it would have been embarrassing.

We looked very tired. Whole team chased shadows second half and gave the ball away constantly.Lots of players off the boil tonight, particularly Siopis. Ugbo was terrible when he came on.

One to forget.

Didn’t grant cross the ball for Etete’s goal vs Rotherham Saturday

Thought Tanner was at fault for the goal. Wasn’t switched on and let their player beat him to the ball. Not surprised he was taken off but after that we had no threat at all.

Thought it was there for us first half. Missed two good chances. Their goal totally killed us and we chased shadows after that. Didn’t get close to them. In possession we have the ball away constantly and lost most 50/50 balls. Their press worked. All our touches were tackles as someone else said. That is was cost us I think.

Would be a shame to loose a couple on the bounce.

1 other assist, he’s definitely not a wide man though but doesn’t really fit elsewhere

The same poor decider just won us the last 4 games. On the night, Boro deserved it.

Re: " Poor decisions tonight "

Bulut selected Ebou Adams to play at right-back, with Perry Ng shifting over to left-back to compensate for the loss of Jamilu Collins, and it was a tough night for the midfielder, being deployed out of position. It was a curious call considering there was a ready-made replacement in the form of Mahlon Romeo on the bench.

Explaining the decision, the Bluebirds boss said: "The last game, where we played in Blackburn, I said Ebs, I was thinking he could close that side down better than Mahlon, because of his performance at Blackburn. That's why I made the decision."

Of course, any defeat is disappointing, but some perspective is needed. At time of writing, Cardiff are seventh in the division and have won four of their last five games. Bulut said they need to be right at it when Watford visit Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

"I said, even after the four games (we won), we have to stay with our feet on the ground," he added. "Today is the same. OK, we lost, but it's not the end of the world. We will have a good rest and, on Saturday, against Watford, 100 percent we have to go again."

I agree, and I have given Bulut a lot of credit. I think he's doing a great job and last night doesn't change that.

But it doesn't mean it can't be pointed out when he's got it wrong.

Square pegs in round holes - reality pisses me off.

Its dead simple: pick your players where they are comfortable performing: NG right back obviously ,and Romeo a natural left back.

How do Buluts comments make Romeo feel? He's basically saying, 'sorry son but even though you're my only fit LB, I trust my 2nd choice midfielder ahead of you!'

And while Rambo is out, if we're to have any chance of winning matches and getting creative I'm final third, then CR47 and/or Colwill must start matches. Are they going to be great at defending? No - but we could get some goals.

That side had no balance last night.

Colwill didn’t do much when he came on, Robinson tried with no success. I am not sure Tanner has 90 minutes in him if he’s asked to press like we did for large parts

Re: " Poor decisions tonight "

Wed Oct 04, 2023 5:26 pm

Colwill and Robinson need more game time to assess any impact. At rhe minute, they get minimal time to try and impact the game.

The players they replaced didn't pull up any trees did they, barring Tanner perhaps?

Re: " Poor decisions tonight "

Tanner made several impact subs to push his way into the managers thinking for a starting place, granted he was aided by injuries to others.

Robinson has been recovering, and think he is improving each appearance and looking to make something happen.

Colwill has talent but it fails to show when we need him to, and although does great against lesser opponents he needs to really start to glow. If Bulut played him for 10 games in a row and nothing improved people would be up in arms. He needs to show his ability in every chance he gets, like Tanner did. And I’m a big fan of Colwill and hope he does push on
