Referees tonight

Wed Oct 04, 2023 10:20 pm

Just watching highlights and there’s been some shocking decisions.

Worst one was Millwalls 2nd against Plymouth, it shouldn’t have stood, clear elbow to the chin on the defender and ref allowed play on

I always try and be fair about referees because they get a lot of uncalled for abuse, especially right now.

There are a few decent referees in the Championship, for example the one we had against Swansea was very good.

The problem is as soon as they show signs of progress, they're promoted to the PL - especially in recent years when more PL referees have been retiring or moving to VAR only.

It is a very difficult job and as there are high stakes in the Championship, I do believe the standard of refereeing should be better.

Unfortunately due to the increased level of abuse they get, their standards will inevitably drop - as is the case with players. Referees obviously don't want to make mistakes, but they will at times as that's just a fact that they will make a human error at times.

It is already getting to the point now when they are struggling to find enough young referees to train unfortunately due to the increased abuse.

What I do expect is VAR to come into the Championship within the next three years, whether people like it or not. It's already used in the play-off final. Other countries have VAR in their second division.

Howard Webb was on MNF a few weeks ago and confirmed the EFL are strongly considering it.

I expect the delay is the logistics of it, but I'd be very surprised if there isn't VAR in this league by the 2026/27 season at the absolute latest.

As an ex-referee (35 years in need of my birth certificate!) I am against the whole VAR thing. It has not help the game it has only hindered the real flow of the game. When you have marginal decisions especially around offside the decisions they tend to even themselves out over the course of a season. I for one am sick of seeing goals being disallowed for a players left toenail being in an offside position, if it aint broke dont fit it. :banghead:
