It’s obviously the buzz at the minute going around at Ipswich as a club.
They’re on a huge high at the moment, so can’t say I’m surprised!

Agree, would also say that Ipswich are a bigger club than us.
We're not as big a club as is sometimes made out by our fans. Two seasons in the top tier over the last 50+ years proves that.

Ned,
A lot of lower league clubs take bigger away support than us.
It’s been awful for a couple of years.
Yrs it’s easy to go to Leeds or Leicester because to many they were new grounds.
We are the Capital of Wales and are a massive City with massive surrounding areas .

FOREVER BLUE
Wrexham carlisle etc taking more away fans than us.

Away games with the City ain’t what they used to be. You could also travel cheap on the train.

Yeah, don't get me wrong I do think our away support should be better.
Especially as we're doing well this season, would expect more than we've had for certain games.
Away support used to be a lot better.

Crap away support for a large city
I am sure the players notice it
Our support home and away has been a bit of a let down since we got back into the championship
People going on and on about potential it's embarrassing and makes us look stupid

Big clubs don't take 300 away in the Championship
Pompey , Bolton and Derby take big numbers away and that's because they are bigger clubs than us
Wed Oct 25, 2023 9:56 pm
Are you all serious? One is a midweek game in the autumn and one was a Saturday game in the summer. Yes there is a big discrepancy but other factors too such as Ipswich’s first season back in the champ, us not doing well in the previous few games, being in the championship for a few years.
But other factors aside there shouldn’t be any comparison between an autumn midweek game to a summer Saturday game attendance

Bigger in terms of support maybe, but a big support doesn't make you a big club and you can be a big club without big away support.
Been pointed out on here recently that Carlisle have has big away support in games this season, but they're not a big club.
Wed Oct 25, 2023 10:18 pm
To be a big club you have to have spent most of your history in the top division win trophies and be from a big area .we fail miserably on two counts.
Wed Oct 25, 2023 10:26 pm
We’ve never been a big club. Never been successful. This debate goes round and round.
Wed Oct 25, 2023 10:29 pm
I was at Blackburn and I can’t imagine those that coached it all the way back home till Saturday night fancied going back up there 2 days later.

I think being judged as a big club comes down to historic success. We've been moderately successful at times over the lifespan of the club but based on the last 15 years alone, I would rate us as a big club. After all, 2 promotions to the Premier League and 2 major Cup finals doesn't lie. It certainly elevates us above some of the teams we've been negatively compared with.
Attendances wise, we've never had that insatiable appetite for football that fans of teams like Newcastle have. Even teams like Ipswich, Derby and Norwich regularly attract bigger gates than us but it's not something I ever fret about. It is what it is.

I think we'd have 2-3,000 if we were in second and winning most of our games from the start...
Traditionally, our club's support grows with its success...

Hard for me to do all aways anymore with family commitments, been that way for last decade. Although now my boys 10 I'm taking him to his first away against Stoke. Hopefully can do alot more in future.

I have been watching City for nearly 50 years and the vast majority of those years a season ticket holder. Let get rid of the idea we are a big club We have never been a big club in my time Yes we were a big club in the lower division than the majority of clubs we played against there.
Do we have the potential to be a big club with a number of years of success ? The answer is of course we do with our catchment area. However let’s face the facts the passion of the majority on this site does not replicate itself with the majority in the so called catchment area.
In the 70s and 80s I was one of only a few city supporters of City in my school which should have been a hotbed for city supporters . If I asked my mates to come to games they did not want to come as they thought City were shit or they were frighten of the hooligan reputation Which I strongly believe had a bigger affect on future numbers of city supporters than some would agree.

The commitment to do an away game is massive. Travel time and cost. Let alone the time off work.
Respect to anyone who travels once, let alone to all away games!
I'm not quite sure how some people do it?? Maybe when I'm old and retired!

It's a shithole, no Rugby or any other sports or anything else to do there, football is all they've got and they are doing well, it would drop off when they fade.

No comparison really, their last away game was a month ago, on the flip side in that time we’ve had 4 long haul trips (Blackburn twice, Sunderland, boro and hudds). They are 2nd are on a roll after years rocking around league 1.

3000 on a Tuesday night is excellent support whatever the distance considered it's exceptional from Ipswich.
As mentioned above our support will increase if we're still in the top 6-10 come Xmas.
Thu Oct 26, 2023 2:54 pm

Ipswich played wednesday night

The last time Ipswich were in the championship their average away support was a modest 979
Their average home attendance was 16,272
They are just on a roll at present

Why does it matter anyway?
We are who we are and I’m proud of that. Some are getting so upset because they have better support than us. Who cares. We can’t deny it.

Some people moaning don't go away every week ? , it's not cheap to go away these days. Hats off to all our fans who do go week in week out I use to but tbh I've got full time job, 2 businesses and commitments so dont go as much as I like .some of these away trips mid week are just plain daft .most people will need 2 days off work .I just can't afford to lose minium of 500 pound for two days off tbh.

For sure it was and for what it’s worth I think they are a club with tradition and history. They are in a rather unique position whereby they are the only club in a whole county (Suffolk) and they have had an opportunity to get promoted to where they think they should.
They are however on a roll following a recent takeover with investment aplenty.I can see them going from strength to strength and their support is expected and no surprise.
