They once said that Sunday football will kill the game.

Now here's a question for those of us who are over 50!

Can anyone remember the first Sunday game in the UK? What was the background to the game? and what was special about being let into watch the game?

FA cup 3rd round, Cambridge v Oldham.

Admission was free because it was illegal to charge anyone to watch a football game on a Sunday. I think they made up for it by charging extra for a Programme. All programmes were sold out in minutes due to the significant of the game.

It's only going to get worse. The new Premier League TV deal that is currently being negotiated will increase the number of games on TV.

There's a new TV deal in the EFL next season. 10 live EFL games every Saturday at 12.30pm plus TV games on Fridays and Sundays. There will be very few 3pm kick offs.

I think it might have been 20.1.1974 Millwall v Fulham but yes the reason was right.

1974 was a three day working week so clubs were exploring ways of getting more supporters in.

But Sunday was a religious day and there were lots of restrictions. You could watch a football match but you couldn't pay to watch the game.

The work around was that you could only get into the ground by paying for an over priced match day program

Wont be surprised if a premier league match ends up being played on christmas in future seasons due to the demand from tv and sponsorships.

They take the coin, TV call the tune. Covid demonstrated that fans make the occasion but are not essential.

I work on Christmas eve and Wolves is a locals club, so won't overly affect them.
