Axed Cardiff City star Jack Simpson issues public apology as he hopes to save career

Releasing a statement, he said: "I wish to apologise publicly and unreservedly for the racist remark I made to Rohan Luthra on July 23. I have done so in private and it is important now, after the publication of the FA Commission decision in the matter, that I do so publicly to Rohan and all those who are rightly hurt by the nature of my comment.

"I stand against racism in all forms and what was said on that day does not, I believe, reflect my beliefs or my character.“

"I hope this message conveys how strongly I feel about my mistake and how I intend to own it, and emerge as a better person. I love the game and I hope to play it again professionally."

The investigation heard players had been given permission to enjoy "a few drinks" after a match against Porto FC, heading into Villamoura town. The official hearing documents state "having consumed high levels of alcohol", Simpson returned to his room around 3am-4am. He got up and went down for breakfast around 6am - 6:30am. Luthra, a 21-year-old goalkeeper, approached the table where Simpson, Kieron Evans and Rubin Colwill were sat before the defender said to him: “Oh yeah, and you, you’re a dirty P**i.” The comment was described as "inexplicable". There had been no conflict or animosity between the two during or prior to the trip.

Hes certainly ruined his professional career at the top level but hes apologised and owned it. The loss of being a Championship footballer is punishment enough. Not that he ever really was at this level. Awful player.

It's in my DNA to forgive and forget if someone that does me wrong apologises and is sincere about it.

If he is sincere then the 2nd chance syndrome comes into play. Unfortunately for him we do not live in a world of that forgiveness. I will be surprised to see him given a second chance specially at this level as he really did not prove himself that good enough.

Claiming not to be a racist after calling a teammate a 'dirty p***i" is not only appalling but also contradicts claims he's not a racist. I've never met a non-racist who calls people a "p***i".

I hope he has apologised to Luthra and his teammates in-person and it was heartfelt. No room for such language and racism in society.

If I was his agent, I would organise something with some anti-racism groups and have some discussions, maybe publicly, about why so many people still use language like that and how it affects people and communities. That would be more helpful than an apology.

As much as I, like everyone on here, find what he said abhorrent, there must be room in society for forgiveness and I hope that people don't hold it against him forever and that he can play football somewhere. Thankfully it won't be for us and wherever he plays his career will be shrouded by his actions... that is the consequence he must live with.

I agree; although I would point out Malky was eventually given a 'second chance' with the support of many on here, so I do wonder if some are not being just a tad hypocritical...?

I'm not condining what he did, I abhor racism in all its forms, but only those involved will know the context of the comment(s) made; and I wonder if the fact Jack Simpson never really 'made the grade' at the CCS clouded some thinking on here...?

Yes indeed.

Only Simpson will know how he feels inside. Unfortunately for him mud sticks and it will take many years for the outside world to forgive him and that's if he will be still around then.

As for Malky those that knew him well were very surprised over the accusations. I've heard one story that was bad but other stories that came over as banter for me. For the bad story the guy very quickly removed himself from the scene. I recall Malky apologising but it came over as if he did not realised what he was saying. Unlike Simpson who knew what he had said and was hoping to get away with it.

I’ll be surprised if he plays in the Championship again. Partly because of this but also because he isn’t good enough.

What he said was abhorrent and there is no place for it in society, let alone football.

But I think when the dust settles, a lower league team or a team abroad will give him a chance to get back to being a footballer.

The FA have ordered him to go on an education programme so I expect he’ll have to do that first.

Another issue though is that any club that sign him will know that he will be banned for the first six games.

He says he apologised to Luthra both privately and publicly, which is important.

I do think our club did the right thing by terminating his contract.
