Seething Rob Page hits out at referee after Turkey draw but says Red Wall has massive role in Wales realising Euro 2024 dream

But Wales can look back at a defeat at home to Armenia and a draw away in which cost Wales dearly.

Wales boss Rob Page has hit out at referee Matej Jug for failing to award his side an 'obvious' penalty during a frustrating and ill-tempered draw with Turkey at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Jug waved away several big shouts from the hosts for a spot kick, after Neco Williams had given them an early lead, before handing Turkey a penalty at the other end midway through the second half.

It ultimately didn't matter due to Croatia's win over Armenia, which rendered matters in the capital immaterial. But Page was still frustrated by some of the decisions that went against his team.

When asked if his side might have won the game with a different referee, the Wales boss admitted: "I've got to be careful with what I say. I believe so, if I'm being completely honest. It's probably a stonewall penalty. One of the most obvious penalties I've seen for us against Brennan. Defender's got the wrong side of him and he runs into him and takes him out. It's a stonewall penalty.

"And we've conceded the softest penalty we'll ever concede. It's so frustrating at this level. VAR check was over in 10 seconds so I really can't get my head around it. I can't understand how they've come to that decision."

Page hasn't sought out answers from the referee and says he's unlikely to pursue it any further, choosing instead to focus on his side's preparations for the play-offs in March.

"What's the point?", he added. "I could knock on the door but not sure what good it's going to do. So we just left it alone. It's so frustrating when they've put the effort they have done all camp. Not just for this game tonight. So frustrating."

Frustrations boiled over shortly after full-time, with both sets of players and members of staff involved in a brief melee on the pitch, although Page isn't sure what sparked it all.

"I was having a quick conversation with their manager and then it all kicked off a little bit, but nothing major."

It was a very bad performance by the ref. Hopefully we will not see him again.

His record is nowhere near good enough and getting worse. I sincerely hope we get a better manager in and properly develop these players. There’s some talent there but not a lot of composure. A better manager will improve things.

When Page was given the job we had some great players and an even better feel good factor about the place.Slowly some players have finished and with his limited coaching of top players and teams we have slowly but surely faded.
Unfortunately he is out of his depth.

We need a manager with more international experience, who knows how to get the best out of talented youngsters and understands tactical game changes. FAW please find a replacement manager ASAP.

Wanna start them off with a short list?

Ref was awful but Page is so out of his depths.

Let's remember, at the two major tournaments he has managed us at, we have 1 win out of 7 games (1 win, 2 draws and 4 losses).

And his attitude is that we are 'little Wales, lucky to be there', so stop complaining.

International football has changed significantly with some of the smaller teams coming on leaps and bounds, but Page seems to think this is still the 1980s and 1990s, forgetting the great work done by Toshack, Speed, Coleman and Giggs.

I believe that even without Bale, we have a decent team with some amazing talent at our disposal and great players coming through, I just don't think that Page can ever get the team development, tactics or selection right to mazimise the players potential. Gone are the days when the team spirit is good enough and we then rely on Bale to score worldies.. we need a more innovative approach to maximise the whole squad. Page isn't that man.

Agreed, this is a very good, young squad.

Nico, Rodon, Jordan James, Ampidou, Brooks, Wilson, Dan James, Johnson, all have their best years ahead of them.

We need a decent manager now to get the best out of them.
