IS VAR ruining the game???

Tue Nov 28, 2023 10:39 am

I am very fearful that if VAR comes into the Championship we will have the whole game ruined.

I know we all have a winge about referees but VAR has changed the whole concept of the game in the Premier League. Instead of talking about the actual game of football its now a case that VAR is in the headlines more than the game itself. VAR was brought in to get more accurate decisions on major elements of the game its had the reverse affect.

VAR should be restricted to Offside with Goals and for any off the ball incidents which could warrant a red card. Football has created a whole new dimension to itself which is ruining the game as a spectacle. Please leave the game alone, it was a better game before VAR :old:

Agree it is ruining the game but the genie is out of the bottle unfortunately. I can only see there being further calls for it to be used in more and more situations as and when a ref makes a wrong decision that cost a club a game in a vital match.

We forget how many complained about poor decision before VAR, when the only way you could see offside or penalties from several views of replays. Then blamed the refs for poor decision that they had to make without several views of replays.
I would happily go back to the days without VAR . But we would have to be happy that decisions like the one we had against Chelsea in the premier league and the lack of obvious pens we did not get especially against Morrison will continue to happen.

There’s nothing wrong with VAR, there never has been.

But the people operating it need to be trained better.

That’s the case all over Europe by the way, not just the UK.

It was brought in for the “scandal” decisions. So stuff like a handball on the goal line, a clear penalty, red cards etc.

The problem is they have used it to re-referee the game and that’s not what VAR was brought in for.

So they need to get it back to that but also train the VAR referees to not get involved in everything.

For example, last night they didn’t interfere with the first penalty which is fine. But then they shouldn’t interfere with the third penalty, because it’s a similar incident.

VAR is here to stay, as much as people moan about it.

There are positives with it. Offside and violent conduct are mostly being spotted correctly this season. Handball has been better this season too.

Chelsea’s goal against us would be disallowed by VAR. The penalty that Scotland got against Wales when the ball hit Joe Jordan’s hand would also be overturned. Those were “scandal” decisions.

But there’s nothing wrong with the technology, it’s down to training the VAR officials better. It should also be said to the match referee that they should referee as if VAR is not there, because sometimes it feels they don’t make the decision as they know they have VAR to fall back on.

No, whinging managers and pundits who refuse to accept VAR decisions, when they go against their team, are spoiling the game.

We are in the championship thank goodness.
VAR is not our concern.

VAR was introduced because of the poor referees that cost us matches when we were in the premier league.
VAR is a must for the premier league because the spotlight is always on the league.
Eventually VAR will need to be automated with ai controlled decisions, like simon jordan said on talksport.
If VAR is here to stay then go the full wack and have every single thing controlled by ai. Then there will be no need
for referees on the pitch or linesmen.

At the moment the people running VAR are too scared to go all in and this will only invite more critism of referees who get decisions wrong.

Either VAR with AI or scrap it.
Var needs to evolve throughout each seasons otherwise it will never improve.

Its not been the success that was anticipated.

I can't believe its the VAR/camera fault but more the way its seen by the officials. Its there to help the officials but they seem to be getting things wrong.

The system is fine and we have had a few penalty decisions not gone our way already.

The refs using it have been dreadful, I think the communication between VAR and ref should be open to viewers watching the game like they do in rugby. This should give fans clearer reasons on outcomes and more pressure on the officials to get the decision correct.

I think we are exchanging disputes about refereeing decisions with even hotter disputes about VAR decisions and we pay for that by having our focus taken away from football, which is why we all watch games. I think its awful the way it is. I do believe in the use of some technology - e.g. goal line technology but as for the rest of it, I think we have to accept that we are all human with human failings. Personally, I would prefer to get beat by a poor refereeing decision than watching the greatest goal I hade ever seen be wiped out because an inch of the attacker's shirt was offside.

Perhaps var should only be there for the referee only to make a descion on the sidelines when he or she these days is undecided or unsure of a snap descion

rather that a panel upstairs measuring a cigarette papers width of off side etc

Absolutely ridiculous decision

Disappointed by the ref who originally didn’t give it..should never have let VAR influence him to change his original decision he bottled it!!!

Just seen it on Twitter.

They’ve been screwed good and proper there, scandalous decision.

Proves what I was saying, European referees are no better than British.

If VAR comes into the Championship I’ll stop watching. It’s ruined the game that much in my eyes.

A furious Erol Bulut has called for VAR to be introduced in the Championship after he believes Cardiff City were robbed of a clear penalty in the defeat by West Brom.

Jeremy Sarmiento's goal was the difference between the two sides at Cardiff City Stadium, but Bulut thought the officials missed a clear handball when Perry Ng attempted a cross into the box in the second half. It's not the first time the manager has been left frustrated by decisions in recent weeks, but the defeat against the Baggies appears to have tipped him over the edge.

"Until today, I didn't mention any word about referees, because I respect them," he said after the 1-0 defeat. "But I think they have to respect more Cardiff City. Today was again a clear penalty, a clear penalty. They saw it differently to us. We will report it and see what comes out.

"It was the second half, the cross from the right, Ng, the player puts his arm up and the ball hits his arm, when you jump you don't face the opponent like this (gesturing with his arm up). It was inside the area. The linesman was only 10 metres away. I don't want to speak but they are pushing me to speak. I have lost points like this. I have reported it and I will also report this match.

"They always have a different opinion to me. For me and for the football world, it's clear.

"We had many games. Three more games I reported... maybe I don't know the rules, but it's not always the referee. It's our chances, too. But I played football for many years and was manager for many years. It cannot be white for you and black for me. Maybe the rules are different in Germany and Turkey. I am 35 years in football and the rules were always the same."

I am fed up hearing that AI is going to render everyone's job redundant. So surely AI can "run the line" for offside in almost real-time and just trust it blindly for offside as we do for the goal line and get rid of VAR unless there is a clear and obvious off-the-ball incident.
VAR make just as many human errors as human refs

100% yes; and I was against from the start...

Penalties and off-side goals is okay(ish) but taking the game so far back is exactly what is happening...!
