It got passed by a 320 to 276 vote in favour of it.
I don't want to discuss if its a good bill or not but I have a question. How many of those MPs voted on its merit or did they vote on how it would have effected their party. For example I would say all none Tories would have voted against it as it would have given the Tories a blow. The fact that they could have agreed with it be it on moral ground or something else would have been besides the point. At the other end those that voted for it, majority being the Tories, did so because they, the Tories, did not want a bloody nose if they thought it was a good idea or not. Bottom line the majority voted for their self interest and not if it was a good/bad thing.

I think you're spot on there.
In terms of the bill actually becoming law and for it to happen, that's very unlikely. Just like it was obvious to everyone the last Rwanda bill wouldn't happen.
But they know they need to make it look like they will do something about this issue, with an election coming in probably about ten months.
They can also say in the election campaign that Labour don't want to stop the boats. That of course isn't true. Keir is on record saying that it's obviously an issue which needs to be resolved, but the current government's policy is inhumane and possibly not legal.
The fact is there are a number of reasons why it won't even happen. For example, they won't even be in office by the end of the year.
You're absolutely spot on with your assessment though.

It'll go to the lords now where it will be ravaged and amended but the real problem is too many Tories think it won't work so to me passing it into law is far from being a sure thing at the moment anyway.

Actually 313 voted for it and that included 308 Tories and 5 Independents of which Matt Hancock was 1 of those 5.
269 votes against it from across the other parties and Independents.
60 abstained including 38 Far Right Tories.
I was surprised to see we have 14 Independent MPs that includes Jeremy Corbyn, Dianne Abbot and Neil MacDonald.

I wouldn't say the GE is a done deal. The Tories are in a complete mess, but the more scrutiny Starmer comes under, the weaker he looks. The North were conned into voting Tory on immigration, and neither party's position is clear. It seems they're both happy with current levels of immigration, and pay lip service to it only.
On a side note, what is the point of a Party Political broadcast? I saw Keir Starmer rolling out a bunch of cliche's the other day which made him look silly to be honest, and left nobody any the wiser.
Fri Jan 19, 2024 8:34 am
Some good news. I hear automatic doors now recognise his presence.
Fri Jan 19, 2024 8:35 am
Starmer looks very weak, Labour should have gone for Andy Burnham.
Personally more and more will go over to Reform as long as they don't get too connected to Farage.
Sunak really looks lost and after last night's statements when the Lords made him look a right tit he will come out with something today totally abstract.
Fri Jan 19, 2024 2:41 pm
The Rwanda thing is an unworkable farce, neither Sunak Conservatives nor Starmers Labour want to reduce immigration, whether that’s legal or illegal. They are both Globalist shills. Blackrock and Vanguard call the tune now, not politicians.

AS I said the Lords have done what the Lords do.
