BRIDGING THE GAP?

Wed Jan 24, 2024 8:40 am

The gap is getting wider:

Last night:

Chelsea 6-1 Middlesbrough

The three teams relegated last season will probably get promoted. The three teams promoted will probably get relegated.

The gap between the Championship and the Premier League is humongous and it’s growing every season.

Sadly Cardiff are looking more likely to be even further from the Top end of the Championship.

4 Wins from 15 games.

This is an interesting point and at first glance the table shows us to be a 'mere' 6 points off thevplay-off places...

But let's look at this from a slightly different perspective...

With well over half the season gone and 8 teams above us to 'overtake', it is a little more daunting than would first appear...

It would mean that all those 8 teams above us would have to lose two games more than us plus greatly improving our goal difference...

In the short term, it is an impossibility for all 8 teams to all lose two games and even in the longer term the likelihood of all 8 of those going on a poor run is (at best) unlikely...

It's not 'impossible' but our task is now harder regardless of who or how many we sign, so expectations need to be tempered and the longer view taken... :ayatollah:

We were unlucky this year, the three teams down were all very established and financially well off Premiership clubs, it should be a bit better next season if Luton, Sheff U and Burnley come down.

But yes the gulf is definitely increasing significantly each year.

I agree to the reason being is teams that haven’t got the huge financial backing are pulling out young talented players from they academy and selling them for millions which is keeping them afloat and using money wisely our club for years now haven’t had much talent through and when we do big clubs are taken them for next to nothing we can’t run a club on a shoe sting budget that’s how we are where we are either you spent big or you got good scouting syedtem or good accedemy then I’m afraid your dibbly dab dabbed

Been saying for couple of years the gap in the championship is growing because relegated clubs are getting wise to keeping their squads together! use to be maximum one promoted back up at best part couple years its been two now this season 3 in race so leaving even less ordinary clubs to fight for playoffs.... parachute payments need to go.

PEMVROKE ALLAN

I got shot down big time for mentioning getting rid of parachute payments a while back but its really is getting bad the clubs as said keep the squad together and spemd on mire players and back straight up fulham burnley wba to a certain extent up and down like a brides nightie.

Been saying for couple years only got look at promotions in past 4 yrs or so teams are yoyoing more but with it they accumulate more money ...... this season 3 relegated clubs take up top 6 so only 3 normal clubs left to fight it out... Leicester sold best asset but replaced with superior championship standard players because they used parachute payments which is not what its for ... definitely getting more unbalanced league

I hate to say it but the way it seems to be heading is for the Premier league (or whatever it's called now) to become a closed league in some way, it's inevitable that this will happen eventually unless something is put in place to stop it.

I don't think it's just the American owners who want this although they are the drivers, I have no doubt they will convince some of the non American owners it's the way to go & they will use the NFL/NBA model to try & convince them.

The thing that makes the game great in the UK/Europe is the ability to get promoted and the danger of relegation each season which most (not all) Americans do not understand because of the US college draft system that they use and grow up with over here which is not feasible in most countries.

Once you almost fully understand the draft system they use it can be quite enlightening as can the FL system to the Americans that take the time to understand it. The problem is that these money people neither understand or care why either system would or could work elsewhere and in totally different sports, they just see $$$$$ signs flashing and that's all they see or care about.

Fully agree also they are for franchising ... like Milton Keynes dons? Someone wanted to take a club to Dublin I recall! I'm sure it was this discussion with usa owners regarding this that led to euro super league idea a closed shop... although see latest attempt put in relegation of sorts

Use Leicester as example sold two players for 90m got rid of 19 in total and fees for players bought in 44m but sighned 15 players in total all of good championship standard ..... selling their best players but they're actually stronger side .... same thing with other two relegated clubs made themselves stronger than when in premier league
This is where gap is most....
