OFFICIAL:

We are delighted to confirm that Nathaniel Phillips has joined the Bluebirds on loan from Liverpool until the end of the 2023/24 season, subject to international clearance.

A product of the Liverpool academy, Phillips made his senior debut for the Reds in January 2020, having been recalled from a loan spell with VfB Stuttgart. The central defender went on to play a key part for Jürgen Klopp’s side in 2020/21, making 17 Premier League and three UEFA Champions League appearances.

The 26-year-old spent six months on loan with AFC Bournemouth in 2022, helping the Cherries secure automatic promotion to the top flight, before featuring for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic during the first half of this season.

After putting pen-to-paper in the Welsh capital, Nat said: “I think it’s a great stadium, a great city and a big club. I think the Club has ambitions to compete, and we’re in a decent position in the league. That made it an exciting move.

“We want to give it a good push for this second half of the season now. I want to play well for the team, and hopefully that will come with success. I spoke to the gaffer about how he wants me and the team to play, and it felt like a good fit.

“I had my first session today, and I enjoyed that. I already feel like I’m settling in nicely with the team, so I’m looking forward to getting going.”

Bluebirds boss Erol Bulut added: “Everybody knows Nat from his time in the Championship with Bournemouth, and also with Liverpool. He brings a lot of experience with him.

“He will help us a lot in the defensive shape, and also in our attacking shape to have better build-up from the back. He is good on the ball and he is a big addition in our squad.

“Today it is my birthday, and I have a birthday present from the Board, so I would like to thank them. Everybody is working hard, and I hope we can finalise more of what we need in the next few days.”

Welcome to CCS, Nat!

I imagine he will go straight into the team. But who will he replace?

Goutas is statistically one of the best defenders in the league so it won’t be him, possibly McGuinness.

Could have a team looking like this:

Alnwick
Ng Goutas Phillips Collins
Ndiaye Siopis
Meite Ramsey Grant
Ilic

Add the POTENTIAL signings of Horvath, Moore and Turnbull into that as well :bluescarf:

As fans we are always impatient for news of new signings but some of the claims on here have been ridiculous.

So one signing now completed and expect announcement of two or three more in next 24 hours, including a couple of real quality to improve the squad.

In fairness, he does look like a no-nonsense defender who can also get up and score a few from corners.

3 at the back. Push NG and (hopefully) new LB signing further up the park?

Based on what we have at the moment

I would play McGuinness, Phillips & Goutas as three centrebacks and have Perry NG and Collins (or potentially a new player) playing more of an attacking.

So essentially a 3-4-2-1 when attacking and a 5-4-1 when defending.

Badou Ndiaye, when he signs, will be the main attacking midfielder and working with Ramsey and Tanner to get the ball in Ilic.

If we get Kieffer Moore

I would play a 4-1-3-2 with both Ilic & K.Moore up front.

I think I read somewhere that Klopp nicknamed him 'Monster' due to his aerial ability and aggression .

I'd agree with that back 6. We can't keep on the trend of the number of goals we concede.

I hope Phillips is more organised than McGuiness & Goutas as when we're cut apart, they both seem to be chasing shadows.

Nat Phillips will get the appropriate game time at Cardiff City guaranteed by Erol Bulut as Liverpool asked for reassurances.

Good signing from what I’ve seen of him :occasion5:

Not sure why he’s still at Liverpool would have thought he would have moved on a few years ago

Completely agree, but be careful as you’ll get slated for that opinion by some.

Good player and will provide a bit of extra quality and flexibility at the back.
Will we play a back 3?

I prefer the evidence of my own eyes.

Always played well when I’ve seen him for Liverpool and Bournemouth.
