Cardiff squad now. Positive post.

Sun Feb 04, 2024 11:04 am

After the January window this is now what our squad looks like.

GK - Alnwick, Horvath

RB - Ng, Romeo

LB - Collins, Esbrand

CB - Goutas, McGuinness, Phillips

CM - Ramsey, Ralls, Siopsis, Turnbull, Wintle, Sawyers

Attacking midfielders / Wingers - Grant, Colwill, Bowler, Meite, Tanner, Robinson, O’Dowda

Strikers - Etete, Diedhiou

Undoubtedly we are saving money by getting rid of some dead wood. Have I missed anyone?

I feel two decent players per position now. Of course when Ramsey gets injured again we will miss him. Any championship team would.

I feel a lot happier.

Much better but still massively lacking a striker. Something to address for next season.

Could find we need a few players in various positions besides a striker next season as the Loanees will be returning to their respective clubs albeit may be able to sign 1 or two on permanents but no guarantees

Agree it’s a more positive looking squad now. If can get some stability, play decent football and look to improve the squad each window over 2-3 seasons I’d take that. Instead of the current play off to relegation hysteria every couple of weeks.
I still can’t say we are evolving a style of play under Errol, but as the squad strengthens, hopefully we’ll see that. He’s managed to get a number of results and that’s great. Rome wasn’t built in a day, eh? As a famous manager was once told :D

Yep, something we have needed for years.

Still too many loan players for my liking.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, January is about improving your squad and nothing else. It’s not about a total rebuild.

Most clubs will rely on loans.

So let’s go through them one by one:

Horvath - better than Runarsson

Phillips - more useful than Panzo

Wilson-Esbrand - a good addition who is versatile

Turnbull - better than Adams/Rinomhota

Diedhiou - better than Ugbo

So that’s mission accomplished.

There will be a rebuild in the summer which is what the summer market is for. We couldn’t do that last summer because of the restrictions on us.

Would also dispute that Ramsey is a CM. If we’ve learned anything from Page’s management of Wales, it’s that his best position is CAM and that’s where he plays for us.

Agree re Ramsey. I was thinking where to put him and I think more likely to be the attacking midfielder of a three than winger which is what I was sort of thinking. Colwill is probably similar and he and Rambo should have been in a separate bit really.

I’ll not judge Diedhiou as better than Ugbo yet. My Bristol City mate said he’s hit and miss and can be lazy. We’ve already got that in Etete (although I thought he played his heart out second half yesterday)

His Championship record speaks for itself. I’ve seen him play for Bristol and I’d judge him as better than Etete.

Etete isn’t hit and miss, he’s just miss. Unfortunately his Championship record speaks for itself as well, but not in a good way.
