Ebou Adams aged 28 turned in an impressive performance on his League 1 debut for Derby County at the weekend.
Rams boss Paul Warne never usually hands out full debuts to new signings, explain our colleagues at DerbyshireLive, but the first impressions Adams gave off in training convinced Warne to start the midfielder from the off.
"You're right, I never do that," Warne said when asked about new players not starting for their first game. "But I saw his interview this week and how he said he couldn't stop smiling. I am sat there thinking, 'I can't be the dream squasher so I'll be the dream giver'.
"Then he trained well and a few of the senior pros said to me, 'He's all right, isn't he gaffer, it's what we've been missing'. He is such a lovely kid, it's like he's been here forever. When I did the team meeting on Thursday, he was in the middle row and in the middle seat. I thought that is not a lad who is a shrinking violet. That's him saying I am ready for it and I am here."
Adams also made a big impression on former Ram Shaun Barker in his bow for his loan club.
“I think the impact he has made in his opening game goes to show what we have been lacking and what we have been missing this season,” Barker told Rams TV.
"We needed a destructive midfielder that goes around in League 1, wins second balls and challenges.
“He was quite lucky on one of the challenges [against Charlton] to only get a booking, but he was full-blooded and full throttle in the first 45 minutes and that for me just adds that little bit of composure and a little bit of time for the likes of Max Bird, who again was outstanding and Conor [Hourihane], just to get on the ball and play some of the stuff that they can do technically.
"We have missed a player like that. We have been crying out for one and hopefully he is the player that will go straight into midfield and make the difference that I saw he made this afternoon.”

Not going to be another Ryan Wintle type episode is it? i.e. one of our signings barely kicks a ball in anger for us but then gets shipped out and starts ripping up trees for the loan club.

I thought the move was permanent

No, he's on loan until the summer; but won't be back...!

He did very well in League Two with Forest Green so it’s not a surprise that he’s coping with League One.
It’s obviously more difficult than League Two but he’s capable of that step up.
However, it’s another jump in quality to the Championship and that may be a step too far for him.

Sometimes it's the right player at the right club and at the right time.
Adams is a physical destructor but so are Ralls, Wintle, Rinomhota & Siopis is a 100 mph pickpocket and they all have more quality. But if you need an enforcer in L1 then Ebou could be your man. Hope he does well, they can take over his contract without us having to shell out a settlement.
